Where to eat in San Antonio

Wife and I are headed down there for a much needed weekend getaway. We would like to eat somewhere on the river walk but open to suggestions anywhere in San Antonio, don't wanna break the bank either. We are staying close to Leon Valley just north of 410 in an air b&b.

We always make a stop at Casa Rio Mexican Restaurant. You can get a good meal and then take the river boat tour.

Casa Rio is good, and so is Mi Tierres which is basically next door.

If you need a quick lunch while driving in or out of town, I can't recommend Chester's enough (burger joint, very good and not expensive - also has like 400 types of beers).

Ive heard of Casa Rio. I wonder if we would be able to get in on Friday night.

I love a good burger. I'll be armed so no beer for me unfortunately.

If you like German food, try Schilo's Deli, on street level but close to the river walk, around the corner from the Hilton.
It has been there forever, not sure how long, but I remember going there when I was in grade school.
I'm over 50 now. Have really great split pea soup.

We take out of town folks to Casa Rio, especially French visitors. Fridays might be crazy busy, but they have a pretty large dining area, if it isn't too cold to sit outside.

We dined at Landry's recently and were much impressed. Call for reservations, one of the few restaurants that takes them around here.

Pappadeauxs on 410 is real good but super busy. You can wait an hour or so for a parking place!

I like Chesters burgers, too, if you're in that mood.

A little further north from where you will be staying as it is on 1604 but http://www.paesanos1604.com/ always has good food and atmosphere. Generally speaking the wait is never horrible. It wont break the bank but do expect to pay $20 or so for an entree. Great Italian.

iron cactus on the river walk is AWESOME! Mi tierra too, but not on the river walk.

Alamo Cafe is really good, there are several, sprinkled around town.

Los Barrios on Blanco, not on riverwalk though. Most restaurants on the riverwalk are for tourists, not locals. Jacala is another good one, on West Ave.

Funny story, took my father to a restaurant on the riverwalk one time and he thought it was terrible and told the waiter so. The waiter said it was authentic mexican food just like his grandmother used to make him. My father without blinking a eye said, "poor baby".

Regrettably so, though the last time I was at Casa Rio (quite some time ago), it was better than most. As mentioned, Los Barrios and La Jacala are good, as is La Fogata on Vance Jackson. Truthfully, in San Antonio, most hole-in-the-wall taquerias are pretty good.

If you want something a little nicer, consider Ernestos, which is just outside Loop 410 on Jackson Keller, where Jackson Keller intersects Vance Jackson. You won't be sorry.

I second the mention of Shilos. If the weather's not too hot, consider their split pea soup with a bratwurst. They're also known for their root beer.

I always love Acenar, its a interior Mexican food place on the Riverwalk. After that, walk over to The Esquire for a cocktail. Opened shortly after prohibition where previously it was a speakeasy. Longest wooden bar in Texas and some of the best drinks you've ever had.
