I'm guessing all the members of this forum are from Texas, or at least got here as fast as they could. Here's a poll that should reveal something about our members. How many generations can you trace your ancestry here in Texas. The first ancestor you had who was born here would count as one. If that was your father or mother, you would be a second generation Texan.

Myself, I am the 7th generation in my family to have continuously lived in Texas. My first Texas ancestor fought many battles in the Texas Revolution. My children are 8th generation, although not all of them are in Texas anymore.

How many generations back are your Texas roots?

Edited for being born here.

I need a choice that says "Took my time getting here." :)

I first came to Texas in the summer of 1980 as an AFROTC cadet attending Field Training at Lackland AFB. It was bloody hot. I didn't make it back until the USAF brought me here in 1998. Was the most "home-like" place I had ever been stationed, so decided to stay. :txflag:

Several (many) years ago, I was on a flight from somewhere into DFW. One of the Stewardess' had big hair and I asked if she lived in Texas and she smilingly replied that she was a 10th generation Texan. I did a little arithmetic in my head using 21 years for each generation. Her ancestors must have arrived along with, or maybe a little before, 'ol Steve Austin?

On my Dad's side, G-Grandfather came here after the failed War for Southern Independence and some guy named Grant destroyed the family farm in Mississippi. On my Mom's side, G-G-Granfather came here from Tennesee during the War with Mexico and stayed in east Texas

How can someone who was not born here count as a the first generation of a Texan? Using that metric, all of us that came here from another state or country are first generation Texans. I am "corn-fused." :???:

5th generation is all I am sure of... I may be 6th or even 7th, but I would need to consult some other folks and resources to be sure.

My wife is the family ancestry buff, so I had to go ask her to figure it out. I'm 5th generation on my father's side and 4th on my mother's.

I have one male ancestor on my mother's side that was born to an unknown tribe of Indians here in Texas. The Indians must've passed through sometime during the night, because the farmer found him in the pig pen early the next morning. Apparently, it was common back then for them to feed a sickly baby, which they had no way to care for, to the pigs. Luckily, that baby was rescued before the pigs ate him and nursed back to health.

I answered for myself. "got here as fast as I could" actually, the Navy got us here, my Dad was transferred to Corpus when I was in High School.

My husband's grandmother was a Czech immigrant, still had her accent when she died, I was blessed to meet her once. His dad was full Czech, one of his great grandfathers also immigrated, came in on a ship to Galveston. He's probably 5th or so generation. Wow, I've never thought of that.

Picked "just me," but most of my family is here. My daughter and all my nephews and nieces are Native Texans. Texas is great, but there are a few other places I could imagine retiring. However, I can't foresee leaving Texas at this time.

My case is a little different. My Paternal grandmother was moved from east Texas to Pa. back in the 1870s (by covered wagon). I got here (1988) almost as fast as I could after 20 years in the Air force, but had to leave for 10 years to take care of family. Been back for 11 years now.
