Lonesome Dove Hunter

#1

Post by Pig Renter »

For the third time this season I'm sitting out here with my shotgun waiting on birds. This whole year I've only seen a combined 10 dove at most. Last year I couldn't reload quick enough. It's so dead I broke my own # 1 hunting rule: No cell phone'n!

Anyone else out there seeing any action? Is it just me? I'm just north of Abilene area near the the clear fork.

Just curious if anyone has any insight. Late migration? Too much rain (for hunting that is)? Anything?

Or maybe Al Gore was right after all and its global warming?

I only got to go the opening day, near Stephenville, saw lots of birds got eight, missed at least 20.
I haven't been hunting since, but I have seen a huge decrease in the numbers of dove I've seen since then. I think with the late summer rains, corn and milo being harvested earlier, they are hugging the ground and only flying very early and very late.

White wings were sparse in Driscoll. Looking forward to South zone opening next Friday.

Idk where y'all have been but we had a big group of hunters opening weekend and we ended up going home with 432 birds! Everybody limited out was a great start!

Hunted the second weekend between Mexia and Waco, very few birds. Embarrassed to say only 7 birds taken between 3 of us. There just weren't many to shoot at. Hunted a stock tank surrounded by a field of cut milo.
Did manage to get about 40 flea bites, I think I put my hunting stool close to a spot used as a bed for a feral hog. Did eventually see the hog, next time I dove hunt I'm taking a few buckshot rounds with me.

Dove season has been a bust so far in the Wimberley area this season, at least where I hunt. Usually lots of Whitewings, this year they are far and few between.

We went last weekend in Olney. I only got 10 and missed 2 or 3 times that many. I've never able to hit a bird. A couple guys tagged out and all 10 guys were able to get some birds. I think we left with a total of around 100 birds.
