The wife of former Eagles member Randy Meisner was shot and killed Sunday at the couple's home.
Lana Rae Meisner was shot dead in the couple's Studio City home. The police are now conducting a death investigation.
Law enforcement sources tell TMZ, an hour and a half before Randy called to report his wife had been shot, Lana Rae called 911 to report domestic violence at the house. She claims he was waiving a BB gun and "acting erratically."
The second call came in at 6:59 PM ... Randy told cops his wife went into another room, closed the door and he heard a gun shot. He says he went into the room and discovered she was shot in the head.
We're told at 4:45 AM Monday Randy was taken to the hospital after "acting in an altered state."

Police have ruled the shooting as an accident and that Lana Rae Meisner shot herself.
The wife of founding Eagles member Randy Meisner accidentally shot herself dead Sunday after a drunken domestic disturbance at the couple's California home, police said.
Lana Rae Meisner, 63, called the cops around 5:30 p.m. to report a drunken man in their Studio City house. Police took a domestic violence report and left without incident.
But Randy Meisner, 69, called police about 90 minutes later, saying his wife had been shot, police said.
His wife died in a closet after a rifle accidentally fired, hitting her in the face or head, a police source told the Daily News. She had tried lifting the gun from a case, but another item in the case hit the trigger and pulled it, police said.

This got me thinking. Is it common to store a rifle in a case with one in the chamber and ready to fire? It had never occurred to me to store a rifle in such a configuration in a case.

I actually know people who have done this when deer hunting. Put the safety on, then case it while in camp. Not really the safest method IMO as you can pull safety's off when removing from the case. Will bet they have taken guns home that way and stored them as well.

The only time my deer rifles had one in the chamber was when we were out in the field about to set up as part of the set up process. Once the hunt is over, the rifles all get unloaded and put into hard cases.

We usually help each other clearing the blinds and all rifles are bolt open and checked to see no rounds are in them. Our rule is no long guns in the camp house. We used to have no firearms at all, but voted to allow handguns when the surrounding area started building up.

My BIL has a .270 hole in a stereo speaker at home to remind him to double check.

The latest is that Randy Meisner is on a 72 hour pysch hold for threatening suicide.
Former Eagles bassist Randy Meisner has been placed on a 72-hour psych hold after threatening to kill himself in the wake of his wife's violent death.
Lana Meisner died after being shot in the face with a rifle Sunday night ... this following a domestic dispute between the two.
Law enforcement sources tell us ... Randy was "distraught and unstable" as he made his suicide threats. The singer's history with substance abuse, along with his threats, were enough for cops to get the psych hold.

Reading the comments section of the various news releases of this tragedy is painful. One person posted: "I don't give a damn about some racist nutcase's constitutional rights and if just the criminals have them, we need to rid this country of guns."

Yeah I have learned not to read most comments in news stories with anything to do with firearms. It makes me want a law to require minimal IQ scores before issuing public communication devices.
