Learned something today.

Been out of the Navy for 13 years and just yesterday I learned they have us Navy license plates you can get for free (I like keep free so I ordered one). I mean they have them for the lesser branches of service too if you were unfortunate enough to be in one of those.
Just thought that was something cool because I never knew about it. Just a year ago I found out about the veteran tag on the drivers license. I guess I'm just really behind the times lol

Are saying if you have a DD214 and time in, you're eligible at no cost for annual license plates?
Or, are you speaking of no cost vanity plates?

Is there a link to a sight or something? last I checked they wanted to charge you for vanity plates.

I can't seem to do links from this iPad but if you go to TxDMV.gov and search, there are close to 100 variations of veteran and service plates, service, specific medals, etc. no extra charge, just bring in documentation.

i have the Navy seal and Disable Veteran plates on wifes car.... put the ISA plates on my truck for $3.00
for information if nobody knows it yet... if you have the plates with Disabled Armed Forces Veteran and DV in the letters you can park in the handicap places.... any government own places (state, city, municipalities) that have meters you can park free of charge for the time on the meter... (think like around the capital).... as far as i know..if you have plates with DV*-**** or *DV-**** those are not Disabled Veterans paltes
plates for wife car did cost full amount since it was the second set of plates..... first set was $3.00

Lesser branches ... you mean Marines, right?

Yes, I got the Navy plates last year. DD214. Application. Picked them up in person in Lewisville. It was painless. They have a version for honorably discharged and one without the words honorably discharged. I personally like the plain ones without honorable discharge. Go Navy!

I felt the same way, I feel it takes away from the overall look.
To the other people it's a free vanity plate. You still have to pay for you registration, I wish though! lol

My Navy vet neighbor told me a few weeks ago that his plates get him free parking at the airport. I don't recall which commendation is noted on his plates but it's not the standard "US Navy" plate. I don't recall if that perk requires a specific commendation plate or whether the branch of service plates are sufficient. Might be worth checking into if your car spends a lot of time at the airport.

Well shoot. At first I thought you were going to save me a bunch of money by not having to pay registration fees. Now I realize you still have to pay your registration fees, but you can get the specialty plate at no cost. I'm going to do that for my car, but my truck already has classic truck plates, and I don't want to change those. Oh well. Visions of saving money get old geezers like me excited.

ABIA in Austin has similar provisions. Both of our vehicles have disabled veteran plates. I've parked free several times.
