The time has come to say goodbye to our beloved Lucy

#1

Post by RPBrown »

Lucy is our furr baby Golden Retriever that adopted us 7 years ago. In February we notice a small knot on her back hip. We took her to the vet, he determined that it was indeed a tumor and surgery was scheduled. A couple of days after the surgery the lab report came back and it is a very aggressive cancer (dont remember the name nor do I want to). He said we could have 6 weeks, 6 months or maybe 6 years. Well, here it is 10 months later, the tumor has not only come back but is huge and has blown out and multiplied a couple of times. We did not mind all of the clean up or taking care of her because she was still happy, energetic, and had an appetite.

Well the last 4 or 5 days her appetite has dropped considerably to a point she is not eating at all, and she is having a hard time walking. Also watched and checked out her last couple of stools and found they had lots of blood in them. Took her to the vet this morning and he said it won't be long as it is growing rapidly now. We set an appointment for Wednesday to send her to Rainbow Bridge to allow our local grand kids time to come say goodbye.

Needless to say, my heart is broken since she is only 7 years old but I do not want her to suffer. She will be missed.

The picture below was taken last month. She likes to sleep with my HD housecoat.

So very sorry for your loss.
it is never easy, especially when you love them as a child rather than simply "a dog"

What has helped me over the years is remembering this:

"Heaven is where all of the dogs you have ever loved, come to greet you"
As many of mine over time will be waiting for me, your Lucy will be there for you in time.

So sorry to read this. It really hits home since Martha and I had to put one of our buddies down very recently. I'm glad your grand kids are close enough to come see her before she goes. Not being able to say good-bye is a regret I've head from a lot of people over the years, whether it be for a loved one, friend or a dog.

:iagree:

Young or old, the heartbreak is still the same, but she will be waiting for you.

** Heaven **
A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them. After a while they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of along hill it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother of pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold.

He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer he saw a man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"

"This is heaven, sir," the man answered.

"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked.

"Of course, sir. Come right in and I'll have some ice water brought right up." The man gestured, and the gate began to open

"Can my dog come in too?" the traveler asked.

"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going. After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.

"Excuse me" he called to the reader, "Do you have any water?"

"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there." The man pointed to a place that couldn't be seen from outside the gate. "Come on in."

"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog.

"There should be a bowl by the pump." They went through the gate and, sure enough, there was an old fashioned and pump with a bowl beside it. The traveler filled the bowl and took a long drink himself. Then he gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man, who was standing by then, waiting for them.

"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.

"This is heaven," was the answer.

"Well, that's confusing," the traveler said. "The man down the road said that was heaven too."

"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell."

"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"

"No. I can see how you might think so, but we're just happy that they screen out the folks who'll leave their pets behind."

Hang in there RPBrown. You'll see her again.

So sorry to hear about Lucy - but ya gotta know that she would appreciate the kindness you're showing her by not letting her suffer.

So sorry to hear about Lucy. Prayers for Lucy, you and your family. It is tough to let them go, but the best thing to keep them from suffering.

I know it's tough. Lost my lab Chester last year on Christmas Day to cancer, and it still stabs my heart. Best wishes to Lucy and your family.

These days are the high price we all pay to live with dogs. We accept it, because they make it more than worth it. So sorry you're having to go through this time.

I would like to thank everyone for the thoughts and prayers.

As an update, Lucy took a turn for the worse so the local family came by yesterday to say their farewells. Our oldest daughter will be home this afternoon and our vet will come to the house (yes he makes house calls) when we call him to help Lucy make the journey to Rainbow Bridge.

Again, thank you to all for thoughts and prayers. They have helped tremendously.

Sorry for your loss. I've lost a few over the years. I've always done my best to give them the best lives possible, and take comfort in the thought that their time with me was as good as I could make it.
