If anyone has done this, did you do it my mail or did you have to go to a drivers license office? I thought you could do it by mail, but all I can find is you have to go a DL office. It appears only out of state can do it by mail.

After the DL office refused my DD214 at my last renewal because it was a copy, I asked if I could do it by mail and they said no. MY CHL is marked Veteran because I was able to do it by mail.

I just took the version St. Louis mailed me when I requested new copies of my DD214 (was remarkably fast when you apply using the online form and fax back the signed page) and the DL office had no issues. You couldn't tell the difference between it and a high quality copy. The official envelope might have helped. Otherwise, don't know how they could have known.

I urge any veteran that hasn't done this already to file your DD214 with your county cleark's office. By law the filing is free and provides you with a quick and easy way to get certified copies. They do not keep your original and the certified copies are acceptable as originals in my experience.

Now that is thinking out of the box! What a great idea. Can you do that with other kinds of documents? Like trusts and wills for instance?

I'm glad it's not mandatory. I'm happier not having it on my licenses.

I took my DD214 when my driver's license was up for renewal. Because I have a CDL, I am not able to renew through the mail anyway, so sorry, I can't accurately answer your original question, but when I went to do a change of address, they said they didn't need a copy again. My original CHL did not have it on there, but when I did a change of address for it, they automatically added it without asking.(glad they did btw)

There might be a privacy issue.

I think as veterans become an even smaller % of the population, it's good to remind folks that we're around. However, if you lived or worked in an area that was hostile to military service, you might not want to advertise. International travel could be an issue too.

I was HIGHLY encouraged to do this during my transition briefing when I got out in 1991. I'm glad I followed that advice.

I have done that in every county that I have lived in since my retirement in 98...

So fill me in. You file with the county clerk, and then what? You get to prove that you are a vet with your next drivers license. I know that there are some perks to being a vet that I have never taken and I don't mind anyone else using them but what's the deal?

You have easy access to certified copies of your DD 214. I used the copies to get my navy plates and vet on my drivers license. Like others I had mine put on record in the counties I have lived in.

I had no trouble getting military award plates for my car with a simple photocopy of the orders, and Veteran on my CHL with a photocopy of my DD214 also. Wondering why a "certified" copy of a DD214 is required just for Veteran on a DL.

A copy of your DD214 is all you need to get it added to your DL. It doesn't even have to be certified. I don't want to speak for anyone else, but I think what they are saying is in case you lose YOUR DD214, then you can always get certified copies from the county if you did what they were suggesting instead of having to request through the Federal government.
