About to pull the trigger on lessons through golftec. I am terrible and want to actually pick up the game.

Thoughts?

Is that something you shoot with a 12 gauge? because you wouldn't be talking about golf golf on this forum... :smilelol5:

I went to the driving range... Once. Decided that was not the sport for me. Now if I could shoot the little buggers! I wish I could turn that bag of clubs in my closet into .22 ammo. Good luck!

Depends on what you are seeking, and the amount of time you have (or, are willing) to invest. If you start as a kid, you learn alot through trial and error and figure out what works for you and how the swing works....what causes the ball to slice, or hook or go straight. I think that's the best way, because you learn to "fix it" yourself when things go wrong...and they always will...no matter how good you get. I've been a scratch player for 40 years, and there's rarely a time when I'm not struggling with some aspect of the swing...it is a continous work in progress as long as you play. That said, the quickest way to improve from "terrible" to "didn't embarrass myself too much" is a series of 3 or 4 lessons, spread out over a couple of months, with a lot of range time in between to try and incorporate the changes the instructor thinks you need to focus on. There are all types of instructors and each one has their own techniques. I'm not really too familiar with Golftec, but I believe they rely quite a bit on video analysis of the swing and getting into the "right" positions at various points in the motion. My best advice is don't focus so much on the technical aspects that your swing loses the fluidity of motion that good timing and tempo gives. That's why it is called a "golf swing"...not a "golf hit". The best analogy is wadding up a piece of paper and tossing into the trashcan...your brain and muscles know how to do it without you consciously thinking about it...if you start trying to analyze it into the sequential actions ...hold paper lightly in fingers, cock forearm 90 degrees while rotating shoulder back and outward, then start forward motion with elbow leading as wrist cocks backward and hand lags behind until forearm releases and snaps forward and releasing fingers to propel paper on desired trajectory...you probably won't come close..."paralysis by analysis". The instructor can show you the fundamentals (grip, stance, ball position) and observe the obvious mistakes you are making and tell you the simplest corrections. A GOOD instructor knows that even those fundamentals are not a "one size fits all" proposition...your height, weight, age, strength, flexibilty and innate athletic ability all have a large effect on what is "right" for you. :thumbs2:

Sweet! Be sure you have lots of time, lots of patience, and lots of money.

If you only make one good shot in a round, remember it, and replicate it next round. Pretty soon you'll be stringing together a lot of only one good shots and you'll have yourself a nice round.

Don't get mad or frustrated until you have invested at least 20 years of practice every single day...it's not what the game is about.

THE EASIER YOU SWING, THE FARTHER THE BALL WILL GO!!!

Have fun and keep us posted. One of my best friends from college played his first round about 15 years ago and got his first birdie before he got his first par. Be the second guy, that I have ever heard of, to accomplish that very feat! I love the game and have played it since I was a young lad...enjoy! :cheers2:

Haven't heard anything about golftec. I have played golf for years and years. A couple birdies and some decent rounds keep me coming back. The Golfix on the golfchannel was my only instruction. Last year I took a series of lessons from a former professional. I have never hit the ball this good or scored so well. He gave me some good tips on my swing that I have been working on. He was also a good coach, reaffirming the good things in my swing and game. My next series of lessons will be on the mental side of the game. I'm a 7 handicap and with a lot of hard work hope to be under 5 by the end of this summer.

Thanks all. I know the golftec plans are a bit pricy, but it's right by the office and in the AC.

Think Ill give their 3 month membership and take it from there. I'll keep everyone posted.

I cannot comment on Golftec itself because I have never been there. But as others have said, the lessons are meant to adjust things that are obviously wrong and get you out of bad habits. Take the first lesson and then go out and practice for a week or 2 to get muscle memory involved. Then take your next lesson and do the same, then so on and so on. Ultimately your swing is going to be your swing and someone else cannot completely adjust everything unless they are with you on an everyday basis.

DISCLAIMER--I quit playing golf about 6 years ago due to physical ailments so training techniques may have changed since then
