The Incandescent Light Bulb R.I.P. ?
Three of five, or 59%, of Americans say they didn't know that the top-selling 60-watt bulb — plus the 40-watt version — will start disappearing from store shelves next year, according to the sixth annual "socket survey" by lighting company Osram Sylvania.

I didn't know about this until today when I heard it on the radio.
Two weeks ago one of my 100W bulbs burned out so I went to the store to buy a replacement. I was going to buy a couple spares to put in the closet, but they only had one 100W bulb on the shelf, and no 40W or 60W bulbs.
I thought it was very strange that I couldn't find "regular" light bulbs.

Not real happy about it. I like those light bulbs.

Been going on for years. Trying (and succeeding) in getting you to use bulbs 10x as expensive, that contain mercury, and where you have to call the EPA Hasmat team if you break one.

...that last significantly longer, use less electricity for the same light output.

The local hardware store has some but I haven't seen 100W incandescent bulbs in stock at the 'marts for months.WildBill wrote:Two weeks ago one of my 100W bulbs burned out so I went to the store to buy a replacement. LED Bulbs are vastly superior to CFLs and don't use any mercury

I'm buying them for ~$15-20 at Costco, Home Despot, etc. and if there are people buying them for $100, I can make some money!
I'm gradually replacing all the lights here with LEDs, every time I go to Costco.
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

Yes, let's burn more electricity and in turn more fossil fuels for no good reason. Excellent idea!
The Cree led bulbs from Home Depot for 12 bucks are great! That's what I'm switching all mine to as they go out. I've been using the walmart cfls that have an outer cover for a while that are really cheap and you are less likely to break with two glass layers.

Another example of government mandated stupidity. Saves electricity but you pay a ton more for the bulbs and with fluorescents you have the mercury to deal with as previously noted. Remember when freon was banned? Of course that was only in this country but the whole world was still using it. Cost Americans a ton of money. Then there is ethanol for fuel. Mandated use that ruins older engines, most boats can't handle the ethanol, drives up food costs because corn is the source. Of course Archers Daniels Crooks love it. Then there are wind turbines that cost more to actually build than they will ever create in energy- of course we give them tax credits. Eagles killed by wind turbines are acceptable but birds killed near a refinery are taboo. It goes on and on. A government out of control. You can't even get a decent toilet bowl anymore.

And let us not forget that Mr. Edison's bulb was being produced right here in the USA, where the CFL isn't.
"I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents." -- James Madison
Re: The Incandescent Light Bulb R.I.P. ?
The halogen bulb is much cheaper than the CFL and only slightly higher presently than the current incandescent. The halogen bulbs also do a really good job of reproducing the current color temperature of the incandescent, so you don't get the off-color of the CFL or LED that come with some of them.
Here is a good comparison of the bulbs http://www.nrdc.org/energy/lightbulbs/f ... bguide.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
