Anyone in the DFW area feel the earthquake?

Our 20 yr old son came and woke us up around 11:10 pm all excited about the couch shaking while he was playing his football video game. We laughed it off and told him it was probably one of those cars driving by with their stereo blasting. We had just spent 4 hours in the car driving from Austin in the rain and we were beat and half asleep by the time he told us. After we saw the news this morning we text him at work and told him there was indeed an earthquake around 11:05pm. His response was "HA". I think he was happy to be vindicated.

I don't live near Dallas so I didn't feel the earthquake. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised, but I was, that the USGS has monitoring equipment and quickly calculated the magnitude and epicenter. Having lived in California for many years I have experienced many earthquakes. They are just a way of life.

I work in a building across from the AA hangar at DFW airport. We thought a plane had crashed. It was a single jolt followed shortly by another. I got up and exited the building to look and see if I could see a fire burning or something and then felt another.

Hmm, at 2305 I was sitting the drive-thru at the Roanoke Whataburger. I don't REMEMBER feeling a jolt, but I did look up from texting because I thought the van was creeping forward. Could have been a coincidence, I'm a little kooky anyway.

Did anyone by any chance "feel the sky tumbling down"?

Here in Coppell, it felt like a big gust of wind hit our house. Couldn't figure it out because there was no storm. Then my wife told me this morning about the earthquake and it made sense.

At 23:05 (with or without the colon?) I don't remember feeling any special jolts because I was sitting on a hollow stage beneath which were 30kW worth of subwoofers. I think those are good for covering up at least a 4.

I was just drifting off to sleep, felt the bump and heard a "thump!" and my wife poked me in the ribs......"did you feel that?"

"Yes, I heard it."

"What was it?"

"You ought to know honey.....we've only been through about a thousand of them, most stronger than that."

We went back to sleep. I've experienced the:
  • 1971 6.6 Sylmar quake (magnitude 6.6)—I was about 10 miles from the epicenter. It shook so hard it nearly brought down the house I was in. It shook for 59 seconds. When I ran outside, I could see the shockwaves traveling through the ground at me, just like waves on a big lake. They knocked me over.
  • 1983 Coalinga quake (magnitude 6.5)—I was about 100 miles away, but still got a lot of shaking.
  • 1987 Whittier Narrows quake (magnitude 5.9—while I was driving at freeway speeds, about 2 miles from the epicenter, on my way to work in the morning.
  • 1992 Landers/Big Bear quake (magnitude 7.3)—I was about 40 miles away and it threw me out of my bed and shook for 3 full minutes.
  • 1994 Northridge quake (magnitude 6.7)—I was about 20 miles away. It shook the crap out of everything, and pancaked the apartment building a friend of mine was sleeping in. She survived. It also destroyed miles of the L.A. freeway system as brought down overpasses everywhere.
And down in L.A., we felt small temblors when the SF Bay area Loma Prieta quake (magnitude 6.9) struck in 1989. This list does not include literally dozens of smaller events 4.5 and under over the years. We don't even count those. So last night's event just wasn't that big of a deal.

At 11:05PM I was studying for Church the next morning and it felt like someone had drove their car into the front of the house. My dog was rolling around on the floor with a bone. I thought it was him. My wife had to tell me what it was.

I remember being in a meeting in Santa Clara during the 1984 Morgan Hill earthquake, about 30 miles from the epicenter. Our building was near the bay so the land was over water - it was like being on a gigantic waterbed. I saw the telephone poles outside swaying in a rythmn. It was strange, but the motion made me feel quesy for an hour afterwards.
