Deaf child has to change his name

This pre-school deaf child has to change his sign language name because it looks like a gun. How more bizarre can these schools get? This shows how incredibly stupid school administrators have become. No wonder public schools in the U.S. are behind the rest of the world!

This story is being reported by 1 radio station and it is about a small town of less than 50,000 people in the middle of Nebraska. We all look at this story and think "that sounds crazy" are folks who run schools in small town Nebraska any different than we are? Probably not.

My guess is this story is nothing like this report is making it out to be.

That makes it even worst. If this took place in some big California or New York city we would all say "That figures" but you'd think small towns in the Heartland would have more sense than this.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean? Are you saying the report by the news site is biased? It seemed like a fairly straightforward feature piece and the 1011 news site linked above seems legitimate - it looks like the CBS affiliate for Lincoln NE (KOLN/KGIN).

I don't think there's any question the folks in rural Nebraska are truly representative of the average American; but I think there's 10% of the population that's "off the deep end" in one respect or another - and they live everywhere.

From the article
S.E.E. stands for Signing Exact English, Hunter's sign language. Hunter's name gesture is modified with crossed-fingers to show it is uniquely his own.

"We are working with the parents to come to the best solution we can for the child," said Jack Sheard, Grand Island Public Schools spokesperson.

That's just about all GIPS officials will say for now.

Meantime, Hunter's parents say that by Monday, lawyers from the National Association of the Deaf are likely to weigh in for Hunter's right to sign his own name.

What if you named your kid Winchester or Remington, would the schools make them change their name? What morons. :banghead:

Its a good thing our forefathers did not have to put up with this lunacy. We never would have become a nation.

They're little heads just might explode if they had some kid enroll with a name like Gunner Glock Hunter.

Just as a point of reference, Grand Island is the 4th largest city in Nebraska. It could be argued that it is the largest population center outside of the Omaha/Lincoln area.
