The above link describes the various styles of "general issue" license plates which Texas has issued
over recent years.

During July 2012, the state started issuing the new "Texas Classic" license plates. These plates are plain white,
with black characters, and have started using the more-easy-to-remember "ABC-1234" type of numbering system.

You may click within the above link to see the Texas counties which are currently issuing this new style.

Although my county (Denton) is not in yellow, it IS issuing the new style. I know because I just got a new Mazda CX-5,
and although I stressed to my salesman that I needed my VANITY plates assigned to the new vehicle, he called me the
other evening and told me he had my new license plates, BCD-####. Thanks for listening to me. :-(

IMHO, Texas made the right decision to go with the new ABC-1234 style. The alphanumeric version in 7 characters is
just too hard to remember, especially if you are under stress and trying to remember a criminal's plate.

We bought a new car not too long ago and had inquired about putting our old plates on it. The salesman at Texas Direct Auto told us that we'd have to have them transferred once we got the new plates. Of course looking at the TXDMV website, they say the dealer should be able to do that for you. We just got the plates the other day and I don't think they look too bad.

I just got new Lone Star plates this year for both my & my wife's vehicles, so we are good for 7 years. Daughter's car shouldn't be due for plates for another 3 or 4 years I don't think.

The "Vietnam Veteran" plate has no fees. There may be others with no fees, but I am unaware of them.

The vast majority of Texas' Military Themed Plates are at no or a very low cost. You can see the complete list here:

My daughter and her husband just got the tags fro a new Expedition which are still the blue AA1 B222. They're located in Grand Prairie. I compared my plate to theirs and the blue is a little lighter on their plate. I was looking at plates while driving back today and saw one that I had to get very close to discern it. I know the sequence and it was still almost impossible to tell. The plate was BB8 S555. The font they use is too similar to the numerical portion. I'm waiting to see OO0 O000

I think my Radio Operator plates were $5.00 for each truck. Yes, you can have the same plates on different vehicles as a radio operator. It really drives the oil change place batty.

Of course you have to be a licensed HAM.
