School Zones + Hot Weather

#1

Post by snatchel »

School zones + hot weather = hot guns. Did you know that? While at work yesterday, I left my G30 in the car.. in the sun. When I came out, the temp gauge said 131 degrees from sitting in the hot sun for 4 hours. By the mysterious powers of convection, the slide of my gun was also approximately 131 degrees.. I had to hold it under the A/C vent for 10 minutes before it cooled down enough to put on my waistband without burning skin. Ugh. Reminds me of Iraq.

Be careful doing that. You are intentionally failing to conceal, and if someone sees it you are in hot water because of your hot gun.

And, I keep mine under the seat in a lock-box, so it doesn't get near as hot.

I hate to be that guy.... but Huh???

What law requires a gun in the car to only be concealed when parked, not transporting it, but simply parked? If taking the gun from a place of storage to the required place of concealment as required... are you stating you must somehow conceal that movement?
When required to disarm before going in to a location that forbids our hand guns,,,,, the gun is going to be visible while it is removed from the holster and placed in your storage location..

I get avoiding unneeded attention just to make it easier with the sheeple.. but I’m not understanding the law that will be broken, while complying with the law your required to follow. ..ie under MPA.. taking the gun from the home to the car…. What section of the law states you have to conceal the gun on the way to the car?
Taking a gun from any place to a vehicle on the way to the range… It has to be hidden? IE concealed? What law requires that?
Im not arguing, just not seeing it.. Unless the position taken is, if you have a CHL, then anytime you touch a hand gun, you must strictly follow the law (rules) as if you were carrying it concealed..
How do you take a gun to a public location and sell it to another privet Texas resident? Without “Failing to conceal”?

The CHL Law that allows for your license to carry concealed.

Remember the law says that "Intentional Failure to Conceal" is against the law.

So therefore, in a parking lot (not my property - but the School as mentioned by the OP), if you are intentionally failing to conceal it, by holding it up under the AC or whatever, then you are breaking the law.

There is not a provision that says "in a parking lot" or "when your gun gets hot" or any other situation.

Per HB 1815

(a-1) A person commits an offense if the person
intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly carries on or about his or
her person a handgun in a motor vehicle that is owned by the person
or under the person's control at any time in which:
(1) the handgun is in plain view; or

And, per TPC § 46.035

§ 46.035. UNLAWFUL CARRYING OF HANDGUN BY LICENSE
HOLDER. (a) A license holder commits an offense if the license
holder carries a handgun on or about the license holder's person
under the authority of Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code,
and intentionally fails to conceal the handgun.

In that photo, the handgun is in plain view of the windshield. Not concealed.

You may open carry on your own property, but once you leave your property or property you control, you must conceal it. And, if a handgun is taken out of the case in public (unless engaged in a sporting activity), then you are legally violating the statutes.

Let me clear this up..... I made it home, was sitting in my driveway, and then snapped the pic. Even if I had taken the photo in the parking lot of the school, my parking place faces a 6 foot brick wall, and my windows are limo tinted (I know, illegal), so no one would be able to see my gun even if I were waving it around inside the car.

That said, i understand the failure to conceal thing... Appreciate the heads up.

Also, I haven't invested in a lockbox.... but today I brought along a towel to wrap around the gun, hoping that it will insulate it from the heat.

Wet towels do a better job of dissipating heat. Since that is Tupperware, you should not have any problems with rust. :evil2:

The whole thing isn't tupperware, but I'm sure you're aware of that.

I'm more curious about which thing was in the sun. Was it just the car or the car and the gun? I've left mine locked in the center console and it never gets too hot to handle and replace back into my holster. I still have to wait for the steering wheel to cool down, but the gun is fine. I gotta start remembering to drape a towel over the steering wheel during the day. :banghead:

Uh, yeah, hence the little devil at the end. Just a dig on Glock owners (I am one too, BTW) ;-)

C-Dub, the gun was in the car, the car was in the sun. I use the windshield screens and they help a TON, but jeez... it's still hot as can be. I really wish the school would invest in covered parking for staff.

Kieth, a wet towl... LoL. It would be dry in an hour.

Anyone do anything special besides tint windows/windshield screen/crack windows to keep their cars cool? I kinda want a prius JUST because they have the air circulator for hot day. Not a bad idea... wish other manufacturors would fall in line.

In the absence of trees, park on the west side of a semi / box truck / bus / van / Suburban in the morning; park on the east side after lunch?

If you have it in the car but accessible, you could probably hold off on sticking it in your waistband until after it cools off. There are times when drawing from a holster while seated and buckled in is slower than reaching under the seat anyway.

I also work for the school as a driver and keep my pistol in the center console. It doesn't get so hot that I can't put it in the holster. :patriot: :txflag:

Yeah, see, this is what's bothering me. It seems like in order to get so hot that it is difficult to handle that it would have to be exposed to direct sunlight. Unless that's the case here, I just don't understand how it could get that hot.

I have a center console with a door that I usually keep it in when I have to. However, there is also a section that is uncovered that it will fit into. I have left it there once or twice and only had a towel over the top of it and it was still only warm to the touch. Really warm, but not hot. :headscratch
