Great story from a time long gone. These days the kid would end up in jail.

What a fabulous story. I wish the world was still so kind to children.

Great piece. I remember those times. It is a shame they are lost forever.
I am old and have started to accept the fact I only have a few years left. I was thinking the other day that God got it right. When the past starts looking better than the future, it’s time to go.

My buddies and I used to walk through the neighborhoods on our way to the foothills, not just with a "puny" BB gun, but with a veritable cannon—a .22 caliber pellet rifle..........in California, no less. Nobody cared because it was normal.

My first gun was a BB rifle. At about 10 or 11 my dad bought me a CO2 pellet pistol. At about 14 he bought me a 20 ga. single shot and started taking me hunting with him. He taught me gun safety at a very early age.
We were very poor in my early years and when my dad bought a box of shotgun shells, it was not for fun. It was an investment in future meals.

Growing up in the same era, I was never without my BB gun or my fiberglass bow and wooden arrows. The birds and chipmunks suffered greatly at my hand

I was curious about the "American Boys Bill of Rights" in the background of the illustration.
It appears to be an old Daisy advertisement.
AMERICAN BOYS BILL OF RIGHTS
We… The Boys of America believe in these OUR RIGHTS: the right to LIBERTY, hard-won by our forefathers ~ the right to HAPPINESS that comes with the growth of a healthy body and mind ~ the right to TRAINING, thoughtfully planned by parents, school and church ~ the right to OPPORTUNITY, to live, learn, play and grow up in the time-honored traditions of a free people ~ and the right to learn to SHOOT SAFELY. We recognize and accept the responsibility imposed by these Rights. But ~ until we are old enough to vote we expect YOU ~ our fathers, mothers and other citizens who elect America’s city, county, state and federal officers ~ to be eternally vigilant that our RIGHTS be not abridged!
“The rights of the people to keep and bear arms shall not he infringed!”
(Quotation from the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution)
It would do all of us Americans good to remember these "Bill of Rights" as well.

My father told me that him and a buddy would walk around with their 22 bolt actions and plink. When they would get low on ammo, they'd shoot a pigeon and sell it for a quarter to buy another box of 22shorts.

It's hard to believe, but this was in Delaware many years ago.
