Cpl. Chris Huskey was reloading his weapon after showing the Glock handgun to Deputy Adam Bohanan when a routine safety maneuver led to a bullet firing through a computer monitor ... to and through the wall of a walk-in freezer and lodging in a pack of frozen bologna, ...
What struck me the most, however, wasn't the actual ND itself. It was the convoluted description as if gun handling is some sort of complicated and intricate skill.
Huskey, a seven-year veteran of the department, went through an elaborate process taught to every law enforcement officer to safely clear a weapon. It involves ejecting the magazine and removing a single bullet that is loaded into the chamber. He then handed the weapon to Bohanan, who looked it over and reloaded the magazine to feel the weight difference between the weapons, a report on the incident states.

After Bohanan — who started as a deputy in 2006 — passed the weapon back, his recollection of the events indicates he reminded Huskey to reload the bullet into the chamber. Huskey did so, aiming the weapon away from himself and Bohanan, and performing an action called racking the slide where a mechanism that covers the chamber is pulled back and released to allow access for loading the ammunition.

“I did not realize (Bohanan) had put the magazine back into the firearm and, while pointing the firearm in a safe direction, I pulled the slide back and released it, then pulled the trigger to get ready to reload the firearm,”
Anyway, I've heard those Glocks randomly go off anyway, so it is probably not his fault. He's just lucky it didn't randomly KABOOM on him all by itself!

I wonder if while he was reloading he was saying, "I am the only person in this deli professional enough to handle this Glock fotie."

" I pulled the slide back and released it, then pulled the trigger to get ready to reload the firearm,” That "elaborate process taught to every law enforcement " did not include how to properly load a weapon.

Frozen bologna? There are so many preservatives in bologna it would take a bullet to spoil it. What a maroon * * * rack slide, pull trigger, BOOM! It's OK to load now.

"Elaborate process" and "pulled the trigger to get ready to reload the firearm", what the heck? As we all know, loading and unloading a gun is not rocket science and if you don't want it to fire, don't pull the trigger. I will never understand why some people feel the need to pull the trigger. A former coworker of mine did this with his 270. He "unloaded" the rifle and then, while sitting inside his truck, pulled the trigger to make sure it was empty and blew a hole in his torque converter. What ever happened to opening the action and looking for a round?

I was wondering the same thing, there is no part of my loading process that requries me to pull the trigger  only my unloading process :biggrinjester:

What I would like to know is what kind of round he was using.

The round penetrated a computer monitor and a freezer door before lodging in the frozen food?

That sounds like a stout round, worthy of SD use, as long as it's JHP, not FMJ. :-)

"reminded him to reload"
"reloaded the magazine"
"pulled the trigger..."

So much wrong. Only thing right was "pointing in safe direction"

My hope is that neither of these individuals are "Certified Instructors" for any CCW class.
Guess they now can be called "Deli Men," with instrumental by Elton John playing in the background.
Personal Hope: That I avoid earning a place on the ND list.

The department should award the Cpl one of these for shooting the bologna:

That bologna would still be fine to eat. I hope they didn't throw it out.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people rely on unquestioned routine without ever taking the time to figure out why a procedure is the way it is.

No one ever really had to tell me how to load and unload a firearm, it seemed really obvious. That's not to say I didn't read up and double check, but I mean...really...

You would think being from TN they would already know how to load and unload a gun! :totap:
