About 8:30pm on tuesday my wife and mother in law were at home alone.
The blinds where open so they saw a pickup truck drive past my house and straight into my driveway. The truck parked next to my wifes car, the driver then proceded to turn off the truck get out of the vehicle and ring the doorbell.
My wife went to the door (gun in hand per my constant sermons about safety) and ask who it was. after opening the blinds my wife sees a young hispanic male with a baseball cap and a hooded sweatshirt standing there, no uniform, no toolbox, and an unmarked low rider pickup truck in my driveway.
wife: Who is it
thug: emergency plumber
wife: i did not call a plumber
thug: yeah, this is the address
wife: closes blinds and backed away from door. (again per my sermons)
The guy then backed away got in his truck and drove away.
I cannot begin to describe how mad i was when she called me to tell me what had happened.
i live in a pretty nice neighberhood in spring. guys. Tell you family to never never never open the door to a stanger.
i could not sleep a wink all night just thinking about what "could have been" if my wife had opened the door.

I also live in Spring, which neighborhood and what did the truck look like? I'll keep an eye out for it also.
Another reason to have some kind of camera system to document this for the police and for friends at forums like this. Wildlife camera, full blown recording type....something.
Glad it all worked out and the wife is safe.

The same thing happened in our area which is only about 30 miles from Spring. I do not understand letting someone in your home that you dont know or did not call. I agree with OP, I dont let people in and NEVER answer the door with out my gun.
Fake utility worker shoots homeowner.

This is another scam which is used on homeowners, generally the elderly:
The other day, somewhere in Texas, a man knocked on the door of an 82 year woman.
He said that he was from the city <or a utility company?> and said that he needed to go
with her to her the rear of her property to discuss some needed tree trimming.
While they walked out into her backyard, he had a BG buddy who entered the house and
stole the woman's jewelry, etc.
If anyone knows where this one happened, please post a link, or just add a post to this
thread as to the city in which this scam happened.
TIA / SIA

Things like this happen more often than you think. I used to work for an Electric company changing out meters. We had thieves break into our trucks at night and steal uniforms, tool belts, and hardhats to try to impersonate us. I had a house one day where an elderly lady had been robbed by a man posing as one of our employees.

She fired twice, they fled and dropped jewelry, but she died of a heart attack after police arrived.

Down in this area some thugs have been knocking on doors stating they're from the Clear Lake City Water Authority. They have pseudo uniforms on. They state there's a problem with the water and need to come into the house to take a water sample.
When my MUCH better half is at home, she doesn't open the door for anyone she doesn't recognize.

Thats not far from where I live off 249. How much further out do you have to go to get away from the riff-raff?

They should be able to take a sample from outside water faucets.

That is one of the things that just sends me over the edge... No matter how much you work, sweat and dedicate yourself to improving your lifestyle to get further and further away from these scum they always seem to catch up.
