What was the most unusual car you or your father owned
Another Forum I visit had a thread running on this topic and I thought it would be fun to start one here.
I will start it off:
MY FIRST CAR and start of modding things......
Many moons ago, at the age of 16-17, I had a 1940 Ford Business Coupe with a flathead V8, 3 speed column shift.
I had the engine reworked with Mercury crank/pistons/rods and a few other things I can't remember. Took it out for a test drive (still with the hood off) and under heavy power I hit second and blew the transmission!
Went off to the Navy with the car sitting in the backyard and when I came back on leave a while later, my Mother had sold the car. Found out later the Guy that bought it got it only for the engine that he put into a Ford pickup.
He was beating 390 Fords in drags with that pickup/engine!

1949 Nash Ambassador. UUUUhhhhggggly. Had the instruments mounted in a large bullet shaped pod mounted on the steering column. Did have a button on the floor (just like the dimmer switch) with which you could change radio presets. Starter button was on the floor. You pushed the clutch all the way to the floor to push the starter switch. There was enough room inside to fit 8 of us without too much crowding. It was a tank. And did I say UUUUhhhhggggly :D

Re: What was the most unusual car you or your father owned
My first car was a 1973 VW Thing, they were pretty rare, only made two years here in the States.
My current ride is a 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8... less than 10,000 of them built from 06-10.

My first car - 20 year old beat up Alfa Romeo Spider (ala 'The Graduate').
Looked something like this:

And at 6' 3", I looked something like this in it:

I'll check with my dad, he's owned a bunch. Mine was a Fiat convertible 1969ish Spyder 2000.

Re: What was the most unusual car you or your father owned
AEA, I'm more of a pontiac/chevy guy but that is a beautiful Mustang!
Unusual for my family....this is going to be a long post!
The coolest car anyone in my family has owned is probably my Grandfathers 1942 Studebaker.
![Image](http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/Arcturus74/2.jpg)
It was a true barn find, less then 20,000 miles on the car when he bought it. All original (straight 6, positive ground) except for the interior which got chewed on by mice. I drove it to prom, and it was as smooth as a new Caddy.
Unusual probably goes to me: I have a 1984 Pontiac Fiero.
![Image](http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/Arcturus74/front1.jpg)
![Image](http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/Arcturus74/back3.jpg)
These were RWD, midengine cars that were only made for a few years in the 80s. A lot of people have taken to swapping the supercharged 3.8L motor out of the pontiac gran prix of the 97-03 variety into these. 30 mpg, sub 12 sec 1/4 cars easy. Just so light, it takes nothing to make them FLY. My current DD is a 98 Grand Prix GTP, so I've considered doing the swap myself. Skip the first minute of walkaround in this video and you can see the potential a swap like that has: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJ7fEx1I ... re=related
Of course, my first car was quite the looker. a 1973 Pontiac Catalina. Puke green, 4 door, 400 big block motor. I was the 2nd owner. Bought it at a ladys estate sale. She bought it new, drove it 3 times a week. Groceries, Beauty Salon, and Church. The rubber on every door but drivers side was pristine. Great first car, I could have hit anything short of a tank and won. 2 bench seats, so it could comfortably seat 8.

Then there's my sister's 53 Chevy Pickup...that is going on an 80s S-10 frame, and going to be powered by an LS1 and 6 speed manual out of a 2001 firebird.
Here's a mockup of the body on the S-10 frame as my dad was trying to work on custom body mounts. The cab is just for mockup, we have a nicer 5 window cab for when its all put together.
![Image](http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/Arcturus74/IMG_8572.jpg)
And then of course my favorite is the source of my username, my 1974 Chevy Nova. Its currently in pieces awaiting funds for a revival. Here's how it looked back in 2005.

Re: What was the most unusual car you or your father owned
Nice cars.
VERY NICE Nova! Love the color!
I too had a 1987 or so Fiero. Me and my young son (5 at the time) called it my "poor man's Ferrari".
![rlol "rlol"](./images/smilies/rlol.gif)
There's a Fiero Club that meets at a BBQ place in Dallas (same as the Mustang Club I used to be associated with) that has a bunch of really nice modded Fiero's.
Don't know if you noticed in the Mustang mod list that it has a Corvette style T-56 6 speed tranny.
So, ....... it's part Chevy.....kinda.....![Smile5 :smilelol5:](./images/smilies/smilielol5.gif)

My father had a thing for Nash. We had a 50'ish Nash Ambassador. Big huge black beast with the getup of a mule train. In high school, I drove a 57 Rambler station wagon.

My first was a 1941 Chevy 4 door 3 speed column mount Blue Flame 6 which turned out 96 HP. My HS english teacher said it was his Mom's car. I was 16 and proud.

Re: What was the most unusual car you or your father owned
My first car was a '64 Plymouth Barracuda fastback. Had a 340 CI engine and a three-speed automatic transmission. The gear selector was a push button for the forward and reverse and a lever to put it in park. The selector was located left of the steering wheel on the dash. The 'Cudda was a fast back with a huge back window. The back seat folded down and the separator between the back area and the trunk would fold down. I was 15 at the time so you can just guess where I wanted my date to end up............. Had someone pull out in front of me and I T-boned him. That was end of that car.
I worked the next summer for my uncle doing heavy equipment repair for Whitman Plumbing in Hypoluxo, FL (yes, that Whitman). My uncle gave me a '60 Ford F100. My Dad and I put a drive-train from a 72 Mustang in it. It had no bed so my Father had an aluminum frame built for it and I put in stained and vanished wood for the base. Got a ticket doing over a 125 MPH and that was the end of that truck.
Never thought all these years later I would want pictures of them.![banghead :banghead:](./images/smilies/banghead.gif)

Re: What was the most unusual car you or your father owned
My first ride in 1983 was a 67' Mustang. Straight 6, single barrel, and FAST!!!...Sorry, did I say FAST!!!, I meant "peppy".
My brother's first was a yellow 83' vette!
Chevette!!!
Now drive a 2005 Chevy Colorado p/u. Just rolled 285,000 miles. Two words: Synthetic oil.
Pride and joy now is an 81' Jeep Wagoneer. 360 V8, full-time 4wd. I call it "The Grim Jeeper". It's my huntin' rig.
