This is one reason I carry. To protect my family. However, I wonder what would happen with that many thugs. You draw your weapon to get them to back off but there are so many do y'all think that they would disperse or try to pounce on you?

Part of being a CHL'er is to avoid confrontation. Draw your weapon to preserve life and limb, not your virgin ears.
Did you even read the story?

911 should be your first call. I feel this issue escalaed due a racial slur. How can one summon some 100 young men/women to attack a couple? Where the whole gang watching the flick? Why weren't the couple escorted to back door exit? Did the armed bystander pull his weapom?

I know it sounds cold, but you only have to shoot one to get the others to back off. The couple in question reported that they were actually struck several times by several punks while trying to evade the situation, in which they were surrounded by as many as 100 of them. In my book, that is reason enough to draw the weapon, and reason enough to shoot it if drawing it doesn't stop the physical attacks.

Yes, they are just kids, but it is precisely because they lack some of the behavioral filters that come with maturity that they can be so dangerous. I have personally been assaulted like this by a gang of young teenagers on the streets of New York City, and I can tell you that I was definitely in fear for my life. A hundred teenagers can kill you just as quickly as 5 adults can. In my case, it was about 10 of them. You never know until you've actually been in the situation, but from where I sit today, if CCW had been legal in NYC at the time and had I had a permit and been armed, I almost certainly would have shot the kid who attacked me with a broken 40 oz beer bottle in his hand while his cohorts were attacking me with fists from behind and throwing trash cans at me simultaneously. It was more than a little frightening. It was a potentially lethal situation and I was scared to death. A broken beer bottle is potentially a lethal weapon. I was younger and in much better physical condition then, and I was still scared to death. Fortunately, my young age and physical vigor (and a newly minted brown belt) gave me options then that I do not have today, and I survived the situation with nothing more than some bumps and bruises and some injured pride.

I don't recall anything about race in the story...

A "Mob of menacing teenagers" certainly qualifies as a "disparity of force," especially if the numbers quoted are accurate...

Not sure why race is being thrown into this already. I do not think that they had time to call 911. As soon as they got outside the thugs where there. As for summoning 100 thugs its pretty easy. They got escorted from the theater so they were mad at the couple. Got outside and called all their friends and waited for the movie to end (pure assumption). Being escorted to the back door exit wouldn't have done any good if their car was in the front of the building. The armed man said to follow him to his vehicle cause he could protect them with a gun. That makes me think that the gun was in the vehicle. They were unable to reach his vehicle according to the story.

This is just the beginning....a sample of what is yet to come.

The situation in society is not going to improve.

IMHO, the whole mob should be arrested, questioned and grilled to give up their leader(s). If one can command 100 or so to attack a couple, he/she a ring/mob leader, engaged in organized crime.

In certain neighborhoods, this is really easy because there are lots of folks around not doing anything in particular and happy to join in any excitement. In such areas, I can tell you from personal experience that getting 100 people together to cause serious trouble takes one agitator and about 90 seconds to empty every pool hall, bar and apartment house entryway within 2 blocks.

100 teens

300 bystanders.

one bystander stepped forward and told the couple to follow him to his car

"While the manager was in the corner with his mouth open and not doing anything."

Gotta wonder ... AMC theater?

Your partner should be calling 911 while you shoot the apparent leader and a couple more of 'em. The cowardly pack will likely scatter after they see that you mean business and you can di di out of there. As Tam said above; thinking time is over, it's SHOWTIME!

After the smoke clears, file large lawsuits against the theatre, the manager and anyone else who might be even partly responsible for allowing this to happen and/or continue. Why the lawsuits? Because that's what lawyers are for.

Makes me think of the line in a movie, "I can't take ya all, but who wants to be first?"

It is things like this that convinced me to apply for my CHL. MPA is great, but you might not be able to make it back to the car.

Beiruty, 'ol buddy, where did you read any reference to anything of a racial nature in this incident? If you are doing a little personal profiling based on Christian names of the arrested, you're probably right?

You're right about the 911 call.

There is no respect in today's society. Today's average teen/young adult's motto is: 'It's all about me, me, me I am the only one with rights yours don't count." When someone challenges them things like this happen.

In the situation described I think I would have considered myself in a deadly situation and acted accordingly.
