The following was in the Lake Cities Sun Newspaper, 10/14/10 (Lake Dallas, TX)
and appears to be a news release from the state of Texas:

"Wild pig problem grabs spotlight.

The Texas Department of Agriculture on October 4 declared October "Hog Out
Month - Get the hog outta Texas!"

An estimated 2,000,000 feral hogs live in Texas and they cause some $400 million
in damage a year to Texas. That's $200 damage per critter.

A grant will be given to the counties with the most hogs removed. County Extension
agents have more information on hog control measures and the granting program."

I wrote this up in order to give anyone with a long gun and some hogs in their area
the chance to help get their county a share of the money. Go get 'em!!

Before they hand out the grant money (our tax money) they need to force the land owner taking the money to allow "free" hog hunting on their property. It wouldn't really be "free" as we're paying for the grant anyway. To be fair, they'd need to make it so that the land owner would have no legal liability for any thing that might happen on their land while the hogs are being hunted.

That's the one thing that bugs me about when I read about the supposed hog problem, no one will let you hunt them for no charge to help get rid of them. Apparently, there really isn't a problem because if there was, they'd want all the help they could get.

IMO, don't expect to see free hog hunting on private land in Texas no matter how bad it gets. That won't fly because of people leasing land to hunt deer.

If I'm paying money for a deer lease (season or annual) I expect that my group are the only ones to do any hunting on the property (day leases being an obvious exception). I don't want to come across someone I don't know wandering around. Just our group and the land owner/family. Obviously exceptions for workers herding cattle, surveying, etc., but no one else should be hunting. I expect most lessees would feel the same.

Not saying that I disagree with you at all, unfortunately. Though there are about 9 months that are outside of deer season, plus there are plenty of places that aren't leased that still have pigs.

I just don't like my money going to someone who complains about too many hogs but won't allow anyone to assist in reducing the population. Instead, they would rather hold their hand out for some easy, taxpayer cash or charge a ridiculously large fee to allow others to shoot the "problem". Heck, there are already six folks (seven counting myself) in this short thread who are ready and willing to help.

If they have such a problem why don't they have cheap hog leases or day leases when deer season is closed?
