I was asked to leave Target because of my OCD (open carry dog). I didn't want to leave the dog in the car, so I carried him inside in my arms. (Smaller caliber dog easy to carry, but too big for concealed carry)

There were no signs present at the front door saying dog,s concealed, open carried or walking were prohibited. The signs they did have present prohibited illegal carrying of firearms inside both in English and Spanish and not in one inch high letters. So I went in.

When I was stopped by the manager and asked to leave, I recited Title 3 of the Americans with Disabilities Act to her, but she was unimpressed with my lecture on the laws of the United States.

So I told her I would immediately leave and so without out spending my money, I quickly left.

Sticking around would have been, I assume, trespass.

Next time bring a bigger dog. Makes people think twice about your OCD

Why? Why did you recite the ADA to her? Is your dog medically necessary? At Target?

If you were carrying it in your arms, I'm guessing it wasn't actually a guide dog.

If pooch is truly a service dog, consider getting a service dog vest and information card to carry with you.

Is this a joke or for real?

I was at a gas station one time, inches from the guy in front of me in a line that was much bigger than the space, and I saw his necklace move. I about freaked when I realized he had a baby snake on him! I've forgotten now what type of snake it was--that whole enmity between the woman and the snake is definitely true in my case--but it was one that's known to kill people. I've met people who have the same fear of dogs. And who have severe allergies to them.

And a store assumes liability for whatever they allow to go on inside it meaning if your little yapper snapped some old lady who tried to pinch its cheeks, the store would be liable. While little dogs are known for biting more frequently (and piddling, another type of hazard), big dogs can cause more damage in the same time. It just seems wise to limit animals in a store in our society.

OK this is too good to resist... Alert! Alert! Numerous CHL cliches to follow.

- This is another reason why I'm against Open Carry (Dog). It just tends to alarm the public and may cause more stores to ban all dogs. Why don't you just conceal your carry dog?!

- Was there a "Circle Slash Dog" sign on the door? That may be sufficient "notice" under 30.05 that you were trespassing by entering with your dog...Or would the dog be trespassing? Can a dog receive verbal notice (oh, sorry "oral"...)? What if the dog only understands (or reads) Spanish?. Disclaimer: IANAV (I am not a veterinarian).

- Are you allowed to carry your dog in the parking lot in the car under MPA? Can you bring your dog while picking up your child from school, even if the school bans dogs? Are there any Federal Dog Free Zones? Are animal shelters off limits for open and concealed carry?

- Why does Target ban dogs when they sell dog food? Kind of like prohibiting handgun carry by a CHL at the gun show.

- When a police officer approaches you and asks for ID, do you notify him if you are concealing your dog? Or do you just hand him your DL and dog's tag...? Can he dis-dog you for officer safety? What if it's an Animal Control Officer?

- Do you carry your dog to your place of worship? Openly, or concealed?

- Can you carry a dog where alcohol is sold for on premises consumption? What about a 51% location? Remember alcohol and dogs don't mix! There is no legal limit for intoxication for a dog! If the officer thinks he's drunk or smells alcohol on his breath, then he's DRUNK...period...end of story...go directly to the pound.

Ohh.. the possibilities are endless.

My Home Depot welcomes dogs, and we have even seen several pet parrots. My Chocolate Lab has her own HD apron and attends store meetings and we have a manager who insists on being called when there are "furry friends" in the store so she can come greet them.

The same manager is gun friendly and I have taken her shooting. She never realized I was CHL until I pulled my 1911 out as part of my safety and "how to" intro.

My yellow lab loves to go to HD in Seguin. He knows a number of the employees there (especially the ones that carry dog biscuits in their aprons), as well as the manager.

When I first moved to Seguin, I took him there and asked if it was OK. One of the employees said fine, and we went regularly for a few months until a new intermediate manager came on scene. She saw me and wife and dog one crowded Sunday afternoon and told us no dogs allowed, HD policy, etc. I pointed out that we had already asked, had been coming for months, but no, she insisted he had to leave. Didn't feel like arguing about it right then, so decided to go and follow up later. On the way out, one of my lab's friends that worked a cash register saw us, and we told her what happened. She threw a fit and stormed around her station, saying she was going to do something about it.

A few days later I ran into her in another store in Seguin, and she was excited to see me. She had complained, gone up the management chain, got it straightened out...but they only knew my dog's name, not mine , so they didn't know who to call. She got my number, and the store's assistant manager for PR stuff called me and apologized and said the lab was welcome.

All well and good for a couple months, then we run into the same busybody manager again, and once again she wants to chase us out. I asked her, "You didn't get the memo?" told her about being invited back, and told her to go check it out herself. She said she would and would be right back, but we didn't see her for the remaining 45 minutes we were in the store. Later I ran into Mike Walker, the store manager, introduced him to my dog, and thanked him for letting him visit. He said no problem, he had dogs himself and scratched his ears.

My dog and I ran into Mike enough that eventually I asked him if he could help out a non-profit I am on the board for. Since then Mike has come through with a substantial dollar amount worth of paint and material, and some HD employee volunteer organization they have has come out and done quite a bit of volunteer work for us.

All of which I attribute to my yellow lab.

Sable (black lab) is my walking buddy, but the only stores she takes me to are pet stores where they specifically allow dogs. There are too many untrained, undisciplined, and just plain spooky people at the big box stores for her taste. She's a lot happier at the park, or walking around the neighborhood.
