Horrified Riders Witness Stabbing Death on NYC Subway

A subway passenger was stabbed to death in front of horrified riders in a dispute with another man over a seat in the car early Saturday morning in midtown Manhattan, police said.

Said this occured at 2 a.m. I have been on the NYC subway once during the middle of the day and there were plenty of seats available. I would imagine that at 2 a.m. there would be a plethora of seats available. Enough to not need to fight over a seat at least.

Just another example of the Genovese effect in action.

I saw another article on this that had a lot more detail. From it, it sounds like the guy with the knife could make at least a plausible case for self-defense. But what really caught my eye was that when it kicked off, one of the passengers pulled the emergency stop and notified the conductor. The conductor called the police and stopped the train at a station. The cops told him to SEAL THE CAR -- locking in the uninvolved passengers with the two guys fighting.

I read same and balked when I saw they told the conductor to seal the car. Also read it then took 5-6 minutes for the first officer to get there. (!)

1 body + 1 panicked man + 1 weapon + lots of unarmed civilians.

I bet it felt awesome for all the unarmed/uninvolved to have their well-being left at the mercy of someone else's good will for it.
