OT. Must places to see in Fort Worth

#1

Post by lefty lar »

My son is coming home for R&R from Afghanistan soon. His brother & wife are also coming to Texas to visit while he is here. When he was home on his last R&R from Iraq a couple of years ago we took our grandkids & our daughter-in-law & him to Daley Plaza in Dallas, & a huge fun center with minature golfing & go-carts to race. Three different tracks. Our son still talks about the great time he & his family had. We want him to have a great time on his R&R this time also. We moved to Texas 4 years ago when he was deploying to Iraq to be with our daughter-in-law & grandkids. Hadn't seen much of them since he is career military. We just aren't familiar with Fort Worth. We plan on staying overnight & having about a day & a half to see things. Sent for Fort Worth visitors guide, but need to know from you guys which are the must see places with little time to be there. We live in Killeen area, near Ft. Hood. Assuming drive time is about the same as last time to Dallas. :patriot: Sorry for the long message. Thanks in advance for any help in this matter. Lefty Lar

The West End (near Dealey Plaza) no longer has a mall / mini golf / arcade. If you are going to FTW, you could always checkout the stock yards, or downtown FTW. You will have to travel to Arlington, to find a mini-golf.

Best places to go in Fort Worth, if you haven't been is the Stockyards, and Billy Bob's, then head to the Fort Worth Zoo (possible non-compliant 30.06 sign there though) but it still is one of the best zoo's in the nation. Also go see the Kimbell museum, and all the museums actually (the natural science and history museum is building a new building so it's in with the cowgirl museum iirc) you also need to eat at Joe T. Garcia's, and if it's on a saturday or sunday see if there's a gun show at Will Rodgers. Downtown is alright, worth going to see if you have time, the things I listed first though are the main FW attractions.

So main things I would see:

Stockyards then Billy Bob's at night
Zoo and Museums then Joe T's at night

But that's probably more than a day and a half's sight seeing, but we do have some good stuff for visitors, great museums and zoo and cultural things that Dallas really doesn't have (it's because were better :anamatedbanana )

15 miles northeast of the Ft Worth stockyards on Hwy 26 in North Richland Hills is the NRH2O Water Park, right across the highway from one of the Tarrant County College campuses. There is also a go-cart track immediately adjacent to the water park, all though it's not clear to me if it is part of the same facility or not, but it looks like it is. Anyway, if your grandkids are of the right age, those might be fun things for them to do.

You might want to take a side trip to Cabela's while you're there. Lots to see and he may even find something he can't live without.

The city limits signs are always a must-see. Best when viewed through a rear-view mirror after dealing with the traffic and crowds for a couple hours.

If he doesn't want to do 'the city' you could head west to Glen Rose and do Dinosaur Valley. It's pretty cool actually.
