Baby Boomers ate school paste all the time with out dying. Those Turners must have been wusses.

I read further that the paste had 60% alum, but I don't know if that is actually the case. Normal flour paste recipes call for just a smidgen. Alum in small quantities is used in pickling as well, but in large quantities can be fatal. I really think the poor guy died from other causes since he was described as very skinny and in poor physical condition; basically suffering severe starvation in a newspaper article accompanying the photo, but who really knows? I thought it would make for a humorous post.

The Gullah people, who live in coastal South Carolina and Georgia, eat clay, aka kaolin.

If you ever hear the Gullah people speaking, their style of English is quite charming.
