Wow I can’t download the photo. Washed it several times. Finally was able to down load. The reality of Communism in one photo.

The ski jump is the white spot in the center of the photo.

If you have been watching you will recognize the three mile island cooling towers in the background.

BTW I searched the internet really hard for the photo using Bing and Google with no luck. You try.

OK, forgive me for being dense, but I have no idea what the heck we're supposed to see, or what it tells us.

Misleading news propaganda. That site is an old steel mill but is now a museum.

That isn't the ski jumping "hill," but it is the "Shougang Big Air Venue" where they hold the freestyle and snowboarding big air events. Welcome to China...




And my bet is that NBC, who is covering the games, will show not one single shot from an angle that shows the stacks, and will never mention them once.

Oh, and a follow-up thought. If you watched some of the early news or commentary from the games, another thing you're aware of is that every bit of "snow" on all venues is manmade. Not a bit of it is natural snow. Has there ever been a winter Olympics where all the snow is manufactured? It's one of the reasons the ski slopes have been unusually treacherous: the manmade snow isn't like a powder; it's hard and icy. We saw that when Miss Consistency Mikaela Shiffrin went down on her very first run of the games at the giant slalom.

I must "admit" that I did watch some of it....and I did see the stacks...can't recall if comments were made but I just thought it was really awkward / weird / out of place to see the smokestacks in the background.

Regarding the manmade snow - I agree - very hard and icy....you could see the skis vibrating / oscillating....hard on the edges / equipment and the skiers! But then one of the competitors commented on "how great the conditions were" which struck me as really odd. It's been a few years since I've skied but I do remember that when I'd jump on a slalom / GS course after a competition (and open to the general skiing public) that the corners were pretty scraped out - meaning it was all ice...hard edging or else you just sliddddddd a looooong way! I grew up skiing on landfills that were covered with ice (NE Ohio) so it felt like home to me!

Yep. I watched about 20 minutes of it last night and saw the stacks on the NBC coverage. At least the one closest to the hill had a cheerful 2022 Olympics logo on the side of it.

I tuned in to see the first run of the women's slalom. Wanted to watch Mikaela Shiffrin in her best event. And I'll be darned if she didn't lose an edge and slide off the course in the first six or so seconds of her first run. Again! Then she just sat at the side fencing where she ended up and stayed there for a very long time; her mother even came up and sat with her. I can't imagine being an athlete and having the pinnacle competition of your sport come around only once every four years and in 2022, when you're 26 and in your prime, the Chinese Olympic Committee basically tells you you'll be skiing on Airsoft pellets instead of snow. Get over it.

Sorry, but you'll lose that one. They were discussing it this morning, probably because of all the chatter about it being a nuke power plant, and pointing out in reality it's a closed steel mill.

They have a nicely painted logo of the Olympics on the side of the cooling tower where the TV camera is set up to view the competitors from. Whole thing reminds me of movie Blade Runner, which I think was suppose to be around now. Really missing those flying cars.
