Traditional Shaving (Safety Razors / Straight Razors)

picked up an old Gillette off ebay about 6 months ago. I've tried several different blades and they are a slightly different shave, but I can't tell much difference. (I only shave once a week anyhow)

I just recently started shaving with cold water. It seems to get an even better shave. So, you might try you DE with cold water.

For Me:

Shaving Soap > Cream but I still use cream.

I've been using alot of Proraso stuff. It isn't as pricey as the British stuff but works great. I like their pre-shave cream, and their creamy soap or shaving cream. For more money and slightly better performance check out Truefitt & Hill or Taylor of Old Bond Street.

Preshave:
Proraso or Truefitt & Hill oil

Brushes:
Spendy but badger is best, Kent or Shavemac are highly rated. I'm cheap and am using a Colnel Conk with great results.

Postshave:
Alum block of your choosing, and then Geo Trumper's Skin Food.

Razor blades:
I use a double edged razor when I can - I only run Feather blades, but don't try them until you are really comfortable with DE shaving. They are not forgiving, but once you're used to it, smoothest, least irritating shave ever. I started with Sharks.

My double, and now 3-blade Schick leaves my face smoother than a baby's bum. I totally get the nostalgia of sharp objects and jugular veins, but for regular shaving my nearly-50 face, I must be too young to appreciate the James Bond joie de vive of the sharp edge.

I dry shaved most of the time. But from time to time I do like a nice foam from a brush and shaving soap. And when I want a really close shave, I'll use cold cream (Noxema)

Well.......I enjoy a shave in a barber's chair. I allow myself 2 or 3 like that each year at the Back in Time barbershop in Colleyville, just so I can feel "manpered" ("pampered" is for women).

In case you didn't know, there is a Just in Time in Keller as well but Colleyville is probably closer for you. I stop in there every now and again. Love the fact that you can grab a soda while you wait and they shave your neck instead of use clippers. Main Steer Barbers is also good there in downtown Grapevine.

Got a triple pass shave in today. . . still smooth with and against the grain six hours later. (Too bad Cabela's ammo shelves were equally as smooth.)

I use a 1962 Gillette Super Speed Double edged safety razor, Boar hair shave brush with Mama Bear brand shave soap, a scent called "Good Morning Honey" and Clubman aftershave. No other way to shave in my book.
