October Camping Recomendations

You might consider Lake Georgetown... a neat lake surrounded by 3 USACE parks that have campsites and picnic area but nothing commercial with the city of Georgetown just a few miles nearby.

The parks are well maintained with clean, modern facilities (but no showers) and big well equipped websites with plenty of privacy, many of which overlook the lake. If you come and see a sailboat, it might be us, so wave!

I frequently camp in Texas state parks and you won't be disappointed with any of them. We especially like Caprock Canyon State Park in the panhandle and Brazos Bend State Park near Houston. We have also camped at Abilene State Park and Brownwood State Park which are nearer to you if you want to spend more time camping and less time driving.

Whatever you choose, have a great time. October is wonderful for camping in Texas.

There are some nice camping parks at the upper end, West side of Lake Whitney. Nice campsites with power, good bathrooms with showers, very nice wooded area. Best if you are into water activities, probably few or no hiking trails.

I really like the Wichita Mountains during that time of year. There is a national wildlife preserve with bison, elk, prairie dogs, etc. It's just outside Lawton Oklahoma, which should be within your preferred driving distance.

Thanks everyone. After reading all the recommendations I researched almost everything y'all threw at me. Even the Okie campsites. As of now we have a site reserved at Caprock Canyon. Many of the more popular parks were already booked solid (Colorado Bend was our first choice).

I think we will enjoy it. She's from TN and that's one of the few types of landscape she hasn't yet seen in Texas. And I like the history that goes with that part of the country and have read many novels that take place in or around there and Palo Duro canyon.
