Relieved of command.
Good. Proper handling of a firearm most likely wasn't his only shortcoming.
All we got on my destroyer in the '80s was lousy M-14 hand me downs from early Vietnam era with the selector switch's welded to semi.
Couldn't even put them on SAFE?

M-14s like the Ruger Mini-14 patterned after it have the safety right in front of the trigger guard, not as part of the selector switch, which is on the upper right rear of the receiver.
4/13/1996 Completed CHL Class, 4/16/1996 Fingerprints, Affidavits, and Application Mailed, 10/4/1996 Received CHL, renewed 1998, 2002, 2006, 2011, 2016...). "ATF... Uhhh...heh...heh....Alcohol, tobacco, and GUNS!! Cool!!!!"

If it was a prank on the ship's captain, then that shows a profound lack of respect towards the captain onboard the vessel. As I said before, he most likely was incompetent in more ways than evidenced by the one photo.

 My bad. I read that as M-4 the first time through.
