At least one of these guys is an employee of the City of Austin. At least one was ex-LEO (detective). As the city generally conducts background checks on their employees, either he's an effective criminal (hasn't been caught), doesn't have a serious criminal background, or maybe the biker thing isn't really an illegal occupation.
I'm kinda surprised that no one has pointed out that a number of these guys were probably carrying CHL. I guess all the CHLs could have been aspiring criminals that hadn't been caught yet, but one *might* want to consider that they are innocent until proven guilty and that maybe not all of them are living the outlaw lifestyle and earning illegally. Being at this location, riding a motorcycle, and wearing a patch is going to cost you 1M in bail - at least initially... And very likely some may well have deserved that, but I doubt all of them did.
It's such an odd situation - really lucky that no one else got hurt. Not a single LEO shot... But a bunch of bikers are dead. I dunno, just doesn't sit right with me, not that I wish ill on any outside party, but it just doesn't pass my smell test. Rounding them all up without consideration of who actually did what sure solves the problem at hand - but I'm not sure that showing up at Twin Peaks is exactly organized criminal activity.
I also believe that historically there is reasonable documentation on some parts of these groups being involved in some form of illegal activity. To me, that doesn't immediately hang the whole lot of them, but maybe I'm wrong... Anyone who has tried to run an organization with more than 20 people will know that you really can't control the actions of the entire group as it grows. At least one group had tried to counter the stereotype so well illustrated in posts above via doing various charity runs... I really don't know where the reality is between the historical Hells Angels and modern fictionalizations like Sons of Anarchy. Maybe they're all Really Bad Guys - but Twin Peaks in Waco isn't exactly keeping a low profile.
Yea, the mug shots don't leave them looking like good outstanding citizens.. I could point out that such grooming isn't exactly uncommon with the Harley crowd - and most of those guys that I've met have very legitimate day jobs... You need a reasonable job to afford a Harley. Most of them cost more than my car.
Last, I'd challenge you to compare those mugshots to the people that you see at WalMart on Any Given Sunday - personally, I think this bunch of bikers comes out ahead... :-)
