Obama announces restrictions on distribution of military-sty

#1

Post by Abraham »

Since when does a U.S. President get to tell local police what they can have in their inventory?

Or, is he acting as a dictator without actually having the technical authority to impose his will on local PD's?

According to the article I read, it appears he is only talking about the weapons distributed from the federal military surplus to the local agencies.
WASHINGTON – President Obama is banning local police departments from receiving a range of military-style equipment from the federal government -- from grenade launchers to bayonets to certain armored vehicles -- as he implements the recommendations of a panel that examined the controversial gear giveaways in the wake of the Ferguson riots.

Surprising myself, I agree with this too. I've always wondered what "surplus" military equipment would be offered next. I just cannot see a need for Apache gunships, AC130 Spectres, artillery, Abrams tanks, and AT4 missiles by police.

Police officers are civilians, not military. Police enforce the law, military kill the enemy. If there is any confusion about that, it should be cause for genuine alarm.

I think when the federal government starts arming the local police would be the time to start worrying.

I put this in the category with any other gun grab. It's not about the guns, it's all about the power. This does nothing to limit what goes to federal law enforcement, while curtailing what city and county law enforcement can get. So, the president gets to appease the people who say that police are too militarized, and at the same time consolidate power to fed.gov. Very smart.

:iagree:

While I am not for militarization of police, all I know is that Obama is incapable of doing something good even by accident and this is a calculated move.

Wow, sure glad we don't have to see local police with bayonets! Maybe he's given up on the martial law idea(?). :confused5

Maybe Obama does not want police departments to be well armed so they don't offer much resistance during the Jade Helm takeover.
