I was wondering the same thing. I wouldn't consider him great by any means.Oldgringo wrote:Really?Abraham wrote:He was one of my favorite actors.

What is the statistic for death by drug overdose. They like to include suicide by gun in shooting deaths. Which is higher suicide by gun or drugs? How many children die each year from drugs verses shooting?

Re: Another Hollywood drug OD
I assume your question is accidental deaths, I don't know the statistics but I would venture the firearm death rate is significantly lower than drugs/poisoning, falls, auto accidents etc. Latest stats I could find were for 2010 when accidental firearm deaths for children under 15 numbered 62. I don't know how many accidental drug deaths for the same age group or deaths from drowning in swimming pools.MeMelYup wrote:What is the statistic for death by drug overdose. Suicide by firearm is higher; Approx 50%, then Hanging/Suffocation 22.5% then Drugs/Poisoning 18.5%

Re: Another Hollywood drug OD
I hate that Hoffman succombed to his addiction after 20 years of sobriety. I hate that he left behind a partner and children who depended on him. But my Bible talks about grace, and it affirms that we are all sinners in need of forgiveness, including those of us who are saved by grace alone (Ephesians 2:8-10), and not by our own innate goodness and worthiness, or by anything we do or don't do. So the one thing I am NOT going to do is crap on Philip Seymour Hoffman's life and death. There, but for the grace of God, etc., etc.
I wish that I could be as perfect in this life as some of the posters I've read here today appear to be. Can't say I'm not a little disappointed......

Re: Another Hollywood drug OD
I thought that he was an excellent actor.
I think it is extremely sad that anyone becomes an addict, let alone die from it.
In my personal experience hard-core addicts generally have a difficult enough time just living a simple life, so It amazes me that such a good actor was able to practice his craft as he did while an addict.
This has taken me totally by surprise.

Re: Another Hollywood drug OD
The war on drugs has recently come under fire for failing to prevent drugs from entering our country after all this time and money being spent. The whole concept of illegal drugs is also under fire. The changes in Colorado point out the change in attitude.
Many libertarians feel all drugs should be legal.
I too believe in freedom. Do we really need all these prohibitions against things that are "victimless". Have we as a society done more harm by putting in prison so many people for things that people want to do on their own.
Then this happens.
Should we try and protect people from themselves.
Seems that we are failures on all sides. We can't stop it and we are afraid to let it have a life of its own.
Colorado will be the great experiment.

Re: Another Hollywood drug OD
The CDC says 100 people die of a drug overdose every day and 3/4 of these are prescription drug overdoses, not a junky with a needle in his arm. We care more about this case because we identify with him. We have seen him on the silver screen. Nobody cares about the other 99 that died yesterday. He made his choices and paid the penalty for bad choices. Let him rest in peace. We will never "win" a war on drugs. There will always be people who will abuse them. Laws don't change human nature.
