Unknown.

Actually, it comes from Balzac. The original translation from the French is: "The secret of great fortunes without apparent cause is a crime forgotten, for it was properly done."
A variant, "Behind every great fortune there is a great crime," has appeared as a quotation of Balzac; but it may have originated in a paraphrase in The Oil Barons: Men of Greed and Grandeur (1971) by Richard O'Connor, p. 47: "Balzac maintained that behind every great fortune there is a great crime."

"Journalism, n. A job for people who flunked out of STEM courses, enjoy making up stories, and have no detectable integrity or morals."

His 8 million dollar ranch is for sale, but apparently that will not come close to settling his debts.

Always amazing that a high flyer can end up being broke, but has millions in cash in suitcases.

Contents of his Memorial home appraised. Includes a gun safe and a polar bear rug which cannot be sold without documentation due to 1972 law.

"For all his faults, he was a brilliant man and one of the most generous men I ever knew," DeGuerin said. "He loved his children and he will be missed."
It's never good when the defense attorney is the one who has to eulogize the person. Pretty tragic.

Still searching for all his money. An emergency hearing will be held. Female Russian artist may hold all the loot.
