Okay... inched back up to 176 over holidays.
Goal: hit 160, maintain 160-165.
Method: bicycle riding (stay with previous 2 yrs' 3000 mile goal for the year) and avoid late night snacking.

I might have to modify my final goal, though. All those height/weight charts say that at 6'3", I should top out at 215 (or a bit less), but none of them seem to account for gender (men are usually bigger than women), general build (I've been told I'd look like a football player if I was in shape), or muscle mass vs fat mass (muscle weighs more than fat). I think I'll figure out what a healthy % body fat is, and shoot for that.

Method(s):
I've got a two-stage strategy. For now I'm sticking to:
1) Playing Wii Fit. Some of the exercises really are fun, but the ones that seem to burn the most calories are usually just annoying. This "game" would be WAY better if I could figure out how to compete with people over the internet. I've got friends with it also trying to lose weight, and my parents would probably get one too if we could challenge each other in-game.
2) Eating reasonable amounts of healthy food. This one is hard for me. I usually eat fast, so by the time my brain gets the message from my stomach about being full, I'm stuffed. And I love fast food. And my general cooking technique is, "First, start with too much cheese. It really doesn't matter what you do next as long as it doesn't involve ice cream or fish." So, yeah, this whole "eating healthy" thing is a whole new paradigm for me.
When I lose enough weight for my elbows stop hurting when I do pushups, I'll add:
3) Pushups (according to http://hundredpushups.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). I've started this a few times in 2010, but my elbows would start hurting after I'd get a week or so into it. They've hurt less each time I try to start the program, though, so I'm hoping that they won't start hurting at all when I get to some magical mass magnitude (sorry, I occasionally have a fleeting fondness for alliteration. I blame Alton Brown).

Diets come with built in failure.
Just eat smaller portions of what you normally eat and exercise.
Get up off your posteriors and start walking.
Even if totally out of shape you can start by walking just a block a day for a week and then increase distance as time and fitness increase. Pick up the pace as your conditioning improves though race walking speed isn't necessary...
Simple.
By eating what you normally eat you won't have to buy special, costly diet foods. Let's face it, most people eventually go back to what they normally eat and walking is a relatively easy type of exercise with tremendous weight loss benefits, not to mention being greatly beneficial to your overall health by increasing your cardio-physical health. Walking produces the same weight loss running does without damaging your joints.

You know none of the ladies have "weighed in" here, cause we aren't going to tell how much we weigh!
So, all I'm gonna say is, after back surgery this summer, all the steroids that went with it, and the 4 months of doing pretty much nothing.... I need to lose weight. Lots. That's about all the details you get.
Gonna go back on my own personal weight loss program - "Eat Less, Move More". Will see what happens.

All I meant to imply is that waist size is dependant on a person's weight, for a given height. They are not independent factors. For me, if I go down to 170 my waist may go down to 32 or 33 given my height. I can't adjust my waist size down if I don't lose the weight, it just doesn't work that way. So, if I get to my goal weight, my waist size will be whatever it will be. If I really wanted to get down to a 32, then I lose as much weight as it takes to get there.apostate wrote:That's fine. For you, perhaps a meaningful "related metric" would be biking 100 miles in X hours, or finishing the marathon within a specific time.My intent was to have people create "SMART" goals for themselves, because each of us is doing this for himself (or herself) so the goals should be individualized as well. By the way, biking is an excellent cardio supplement to a weight loss diet. The addition of running is even better, but they are not for everyone for sure.

Put me back on the wagon.
Current weight: 237
Eventual goal: 190 (and the 34" waist jeans I wore in High school!)
Realistic goal: 205
Action plan: Don't snack late at night/after dinner. Eat smaller portions. Eat more of the good stuff and less processed stuff. (Bacon is an exempt item. Bacon is good for you. Especially in a Mo's Dark Bacon Bar.

About 2 years ago, I was going to "lose 40 pounds by the time I turn 40," which was 205# and a realistic goal at that point. I lost almost 30 and had 6 months to go, then I tore a ligament in my foot (because I was wearing crappy shoes - don't cheap out on your exercise shoes folks!!) and wound up putting most of it back on over the next year.
I know 32 pounds is pretty aggressive for 5 months, but I'd like to be close to that original goal of 205 when birthday #41 comes around in May.
We can do this, folks!

Well I certainly won’t win any weight loss contests but I will jump
in because for me it is important to tell others my plans.
Makes me feel more accountable I guess.
Current: 211# waist 39
Goal: 199# waist 36-37
April 2009 I weighed 242# and was a 40-42 and felt sluggish.
I carried 220 for years and thought little of it because I felt good.
Age has a way of changing the way you feel about weight.
I decided I would start walking. I started walking 30 minutes
and did not care how far I walked. In May my wife signed up for the
Koman 3-Day. It is 60 miles in three days. Although I did not walk with her I trained with her. In 2009 we walked over 700 miles. I did about 800. In 2010 did the same thing with a little less mileage. I also would run short distances to up my heart rate.
My point is you can do more than you think by just walking. I was stubborn at first but
I am a believer now. My lowest weight was 198#. This is 10# less then I ever thought was possible. I went down 4 neck sizes and 3 pant sizes. I have gotten a little lax as of late and thus this post. Call it a promise to myself with witnesses.
Anyway, let’s do this.

But like everyone else, weight loss is a part of my goal for the New Year, but it is not the focus of the goal. I want to focus on my health and my physical abilities. I love IDPA and I know I can do better at it if I were in better shape and there was less of me to move around the scenario.

I'll join in. I lost 20 pounds last year (actually 35 but gained back 15 over the holidays) using Slim4Life. I plan to go back on starting next Monday.
