I disagree, people need to learn how to express themselves properly.
For instance, take using the f-word. What did you mean when you said it? Did you mean you want to have sex? Something was broken? You've hurt yourself? All could be true using the same word and for a single word to have so many meanings it becomes a "noise" word. A "noise" word has no meaning at all and is simply filler in a conversation.
Why would you choose to speak words that have no meaning? Would it make sense to say this...
"Well grape, you know, that grape guy that we went to grape school with. Well him and his grape wife are coming to see our grape house this grape weekend. So I grape guess we'll be cleaning the whole grape house so they'll be grape impressed. Should we call grape Ted and Ellen? They went to grape school with him too. Guess we'll have to cancel the grape get together with the grape Jones', they'll be grape pleased with us. It's the fourth grape time we've grape begged off on them."
The noise word is just filling space, it's not needed. They do not add to the conversation in any way. So many people use foul language without any regard for the people around them. Whether they be adults or children. And even as an adult, I find foul language, without restraint, offensive.

I am well aware of what the standards are on this forum and I try my level best to adhere to them, thank you very much; after all, I realize am a guest of Mr. Cotton's here and I agreed to those restrictions in order to maintain a membership here. If I want to play on his field I have to obey his rules and I respect that.Mr. Cotton and the moderators continually remind us of the standards that exist on this forum and we excuse this example of obnoxious behavior by insisting we develop a thicker skin?
No such agreement exists on the street. Or in WalMart. With all due respect, neither place is TexasCHLforum.com and the standards here are not applicable there.
I'm not excusing anything. It just really irks me all the busybodiness going around today. Everywhere you go, there's a bunch of do-gooders sticking their noses into other people's private business telling them how to speak, how to raise their children -- it goes on and on. A great spiritual master in the First Century once said:
1‘Do not judge, so that you may not be judged. 2 For with the judgment you make you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. 3 Why do you see the speck in your neighbor’s* eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your neighbor,* “Let me take the speck out of your eye”, while the log is in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor’s eye.
Mt 7:1-5, NRSV
I found that my life improved dramatically for the better when I stopped worrying about what other people were supposed to be doing and instead concentrated on what I was supposed to be doing.
That's a mighty big assumption you make. You don't know me from Adam. For all you know, growing up in the trailer court in West Virginia, my mother could have had a mouth on her that would make a sailor blush. Not everyone grew up as sensitive and civilized as you. But when I come to your house for a visit, I will certainly respect your wishes. You wouldn't talk to your mother, wife or daughter that way, it is not acceptable behavior in a civilized society, and I would not tolerate your using it in the presence of my family.
This whole incident under discussion boils down to some busybody who had his tender virgin ears assaulted by a stranger's colorful language in a public place and chose to throw his badge and his "authority" around instead of acting like an adult and minding his own business.

You can apply the same to the second amendment too. In the perfect world we would not need to have laws or courts, would we? I am in total agreement with you and the typical busybody....typically they are the ones who need to put their house in order. I guess if a LEO tickets you then they are a busybody.bdickens wrote:

The evidence of our efforts is in what we leave behind.
That is the way it is supposed to be. Standing up and letting someone know when they have overstepped their bounds is not judging someone. Using that logic in the manner you prescribe would result in anarchy.bdickens wrote: I found that my life improved dramatically for the better when I stopped worrying about what other people were supposed to be doing and instead concentrated on what I was supposed to be doing.
I have no idea how you reacted to your mother's speech. My mother still to this day has no qualms about using the "N" word and uses the excuse that she is a product of her environment. My sons have never heard that word from me and I refuse to allow her to speak that way in my house. The excuse "that is the way I was raised." carries no weight in a civilized, educated society.bdickens wrote:That's a mighty big assumption you make. You don't know me from Adam. I suppose all LEO should just mind their own business.bdickens wrote: This whole incident under discussion boils down to some busybody who had his tender virgin ears assaulted by a stranger's colorful language in a public place and chose to throw his badge and his "authority" around instead of acting like an adult and minding his own business.

Re: Potty Mouth
Who decides what a vulgar word is?
What would it take for the word "Semprini" to become vulgar?
Thats the problem with laws like this.

Someone dropping an "F-bomb" into a private conversation hardly equates to murder, arson, rape, speeding, running stop signs, double-parking or even littering.

I'd include "why." When I dislocated my knee, the two sailors that happened to be near me on the trail learned some new words. I wouldn't use that language to describe how cheap the clearance shirts at Wally World are, though.KBCraig wrote:This is a "time, place, manner" offense. IMO, these tickets should be reserved for the types who go into a park, restaurant or similar place and bellow obscenities constantly or play obscene lyrics on their stereos at Richter-scale volumes.

This is a hearsay story, maybe she said. Yes the guy should have waited on the other side of the aisle to see if it esculated rather than bully in. Walmart has security people that could have taken care of it better than a man who butted in. Was security called by the man? Seems like he caused the scene.

It sounds as if the good firefighter has too much time on his hands and lacks the sense to know what else to do with it.

Re: Potty Mouth
Let me see.. a Wal-Mart the day before a hurricane hits. A woman with her mother and daughter enter the store & when she cannot find any batteries, she lets out an expletive. According to her, that's all she does, nothing else. But the assistant fire marshall decides to go all the way outside to his car in order to get his ticket book and write her a ticket. Even goes to the trouble to cuff the lady.
Does this really sound like she was having a "private conversation"? Why would any LEO bother with anything more than a verbal warning if that was really all she did.
I'd bet good money that she was going off like a bottle rocket & the Captain did the right thing to keep order. Any chance of getting the Wal-Mart camera footage?
And as far as the child, be prepared for CPS to be involved with this one.

I can really care less about this. What bothers me in when a professing Christian cusses like a sailor as soon as they leave the Church. One of the many reasons why they call Christians hypocrites.

Re: Potty Mouth
I don't know if this will stick if they can't get some citizen from the store to come to court and testify they were offended. I was taught in the police academy that peace officers in Texas can't "be offended". In other words they can't right a ticket unless someone says they want them too. I don't know though we may see.
On another note I too believe that we should be able to talk how we want without getting a ticket....
Didn't the Supreme Court strike down prior restraint?
