Jupiter and Saturn Conjunction

Tonight at 6:00pm.

What did you use for that view?
I took a few shots at between 24 and 105mm, and a couple with my 200mm. None of them came out very well. I know 'the big event' was tonight, but I'll try a few more shots over the next several evenings.

2000mm F8 with a cell phone held behind the lens and snapped. Not ideal. Going to try again tonight if it’s clear. I have a Canon actually attached to the big lens ( actually a telescope) but it takes some computer work to get it on line. I’ll post those later.

So I am Facebook friends with a TV news reporter in another city.

She shared the attached photo. Some other friends have also shared the same photo. It was supposedly taken in Australia.

It is obviously to me a photoshopped composite.

I commented that it was photoshopped.

She denied it and said it was real. ( anything a journalist posts must be real )

I suggested she might want to do some investigative journalism on her post.

She said if Facebook says it’s fake she will believe that.

Many other commenters thought it didn’t look right.

Someone posted a diagram of the planets which showed the correct locations and names of the planets and moons and said that the Jupiter moons had moved in the 12 hour difference between the US and Australia. Thus solving the difference.

The diagram was correct and it did not match at all the fake photograph.

The news reporter then declared that her post was correct and not photoshopped.

I some how felt I was watching the news media world right now in miniature.

Instead of access to the internet making people smarter, it has turned them all into brainless morons.

It's fake. Jupiter's moons were not in that position Monday night. Considering I watched it live through my telescope, you can also verify the position of the moons from a chart in Sky & Telescope magazine. The moons do not move that fast in 12 hours.

The person also claimed that it was taken with a 300mm lens on their camera.

Now since then I have realized that being in Australia they are on their heads. In addition a telescope reverses the image.

However it does not account for Saturns rings being at 90degrees.

Nor the unbelievable resolution of the 300 mm lens with Saturn.

We got a good look at it last night, although through some trees.
It was easier to see, I think, because of the greater separation between the planets than the night before.

Very cool, and a good reason to get outside on a nice December evening.

So the photo has gone viral. News sources in India are picking it up and putting it on line.

Twitter has it but no disclaimer saying it’s fake.
