I knew all but Refugio, I have been mispronouncing it all my life.

Re: Southerners try to pronounce Texas towns
When I first came to Texas, it took awhile to realize that the town I saw on the map spelled Refugio was the same town that I heard people calling ruh-FEER-ee-oh.
"Hewstun" would be another puzzler for outsiders if it wasn't already so famous for oil and NASA. I grew up in southern Indiana, and there is a very small, tiny town out in the middle of nowhere that's spelled "Houston" and locally pronounced "Howse-tun." I used to pass it on the way from where I lived to Boy Scout summer camp, is which buried in part the of Hoosier National Forest. So Houston was well out in the sticks. There were more people in the cemetery than among the living.
Oh, and locally here to Seguin (which outsiders typically call "SEG-win" or See-kwin", like the little glittering decoration) we have New Berlin. I grew up hearing the capital of Germany pronounced in English as "ber-LIN," with emphasis on the second syllable, but here locally it's tiny progeny is "new BER-lin", with emphasis on the first syllable.

Hallsville is between where I live and where I work. I know several people who live there, and most of them pronounce it like it appears. Only those of us who don’t live there pronounce it Hallsvul.gamboolman wrote: ↑Thu Dec 03, 2020 9:35 am I was born and raised in Texas but I missed several of them

Off subject, but I love "It's A Southern Thing" channel. One of the few YouTube channels I subscribe to.

I did ... not well.
I had the same problem when I arrived in SoCal back in '84. However, I've been here over 30 years and still did ... not well.

I'll admit I missed Refugio and some of the others I never heard of even though I'm a native.
That did send me off on an hour long tangent watching their channel.

Re: Southerners try to pronounce Texas towns
I missed several of them and have lived here since nine years old. The issue isn't Southern. I am thinking the German influence from Texas early days influenced some of those spellings. Maybe not?

When I first visited San Antonio, I kept wondering why the local news always mentioned "Bear" county....finally figured it out-"Bexar". Duh..
