When I go to the IRS website to update my bank account info I get an error that says we are unable to verify eligibility. It doesn't ask for any more information or promise to follow up with me.

My son and daughter in law got theirs in the bank today. My wife and I did not. When I try to track it on the IRS’s website, I get this message:

Payment Status Not Available

According to information that we have on file, we cannot determine your eligibility for a payment at this time.

None of this tells me anything. I haven’t filed my 2019 tax return yet, but I DID file my 2018 tax return. As it happens, I broke even in 2018, and neither paid additional taxes, nor received a refund. So there was never a direct deposit from the IRS to my checking account for my 2018 filing. That said, they have made direct payments to that account in previous years.

I'm in the same boat (except that I owed a bit last year).

The way I understood the deal is that this has nothing to do with the IRS other than verifying ones income.They are not allowed to withhold the money because one owes the IRS back taxes or present taxes.

I just checked the IRS site and this time I got the message "We need more information" instead of the previous message "Status cannot be determined". So, I proceeded to provide the information requested; some data from my 2018 return (I haven't filed my 2019 return yet) and my banking information. We'll see if I get any money.

My hypothesis is that if you didn't get a refund in 2018 or 2019, their software couldn't retrieve your bank information, even though they should have it (I owed last year and they took the amount I owed out of my checking account).

I posted about getting the same message, but I don't see it in the thread. Weird. Same experience. I had to enter information they already had to confirm they had it! I thought I was a character in Catch 22! I'm not holding my breath.
