1684 - Spanish explorer Juan Domínguez de Mendoza, crossed the Pecos River two miles west of what is now State Highway 349 in northwestern Crockett County. His expedition camped at the crossing, and Mendoza called it San Pantaleon. Later to be called Camp Melvin, by 1960 the only remnants of Camp Melvin were several crumbling walls of former buildings and a stone corral. 1837 - James W. Tinsley, soldier of the Republic of Texas, was nominated major of the cavalry battalion, and the Senate confirmed the nomination on this day.

1839 - Edward Burleson, commander of the Frontier Regiment, intercepted a Córdova agent with proof that Mexico had made allies of Cherokees and other Indians.

1900 - At Turner Hall, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra played its inaugural concert under the direction of Hans Kreissig.

1987 - On the night of May 22, 1987, Saragosa was hit by a violent, multiple-vortex tornado. Thirty of the 183 inhabitants were killed, and 121 were injured. The storm cut a half-mile-wide path through the village and destroyed 85 percent of its structures. Total damage was $1.3 million.

1953 - U.S. President Eisenhower signed the Tidelands Bill giving Texas the rights to its offshore oil.

1991 - On this day in 1991, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom visited Antioch Church, the first black Baptist church in Houston. Antioch Missionary Baptist Church was organized in 1866.

2003 - At the Colonial in Fort Worth, TX, Annika Sorenstam became the first woman to play on the PGA tour in 58 years. She ended the day at 1-over par.
