There's always someone bigger, badder, tougher, meaner, faster etc. I can't imagine covering that much ground that quickly.

Re: Ground Speed please
I read an article containing another story from the same pilot talking about the slowest he had ever flown a SR71, it was about as good of a story as this one or any other about high speed, I wish I would have bookmarked it. If I ever find it again I'll try to remember to post a link.

Re: Ground Speed please
A buddy and I took an F-4 from the Texas ANG in Houston to Randolph AFB in early '80s. It was for their open house so lots of different aircraft on the ramp for the tax payers to see and ask questions. At one time the SR-71 was very secret. I believe the flew out of Beale and Kadena. If they had to divert on an emergency to any other base, it was immediately whisked into a hanger. By the time of this airshow/open house, they were now sending it out for the public to view. They did have cones and a rope to prevent people from getting too close. I got to talking to the back seater comparing some of the funny questions we'd get. (Are those bombs? No, fuel tanks. Is that a gun? No, pilot tube.)
He said he had a guy who wanted to know how fast and how high. The RSO kept telling him Mach 3+, 80M+. They guy wouldn't take that for an answer and persisted. Finally the RSO asked, "do you know the poem High Flight" (Look it up if you don't). You know at the end when it talks about reaching out your hand and touching the face of God? Well, we have to slow down and descend".

The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

Re: Ground Speed please
My understanding is the SR71 could overfly the soviet union, that because of it's speed and altitude by the time the russian picked it up on radar, got a missile lock, launched the missile the SR71 was out of range!

Re: Ground Speed please
Great story. I bet I can get the best report for the slowest ground speed.

I have no military or piloting experience and that still made me laugh out loud!

Re: Ground Speed please
One of my favorite stories about the SR71. My last boss in the Air Force was a crew chief on the SR71 until they pulled the plug on them.
