No "Trigger warnings" at UChicago
One of the last places I'd expect to be a bastion of freedom. Or is my view just colored by it being in Chicago?

" Our commitment to academic freedom means that we do not support so called ‘trigger warnings,’ we do not cancel invited speakers because their topics might prove controversial, and we do not condone the creation of intellectual ‘safe spaces’ where individuals can retreat from ideas and perspectives at odds with their own.
Fostering the free exchange of ideas reinforces a related University priority—building a campus that welcomes people of all backgrounds. Diversity of opinion and background is a fundamental strength of our community. The members of our community must have the freedom to espouse and explore a wide range of ideas."

This is awesome. We don't seem to have a policy either way.

Unwritten addendum: "Unless you or the speaker in question is a Repubican, a conservative or a white male, then the University will move to protect your freedom from hearing alternate ideas."jmorris wrote:One of the last places I'd expect to be a bastion of freedom. The left lies about everything. Truth is a liberal value, and truth is a conservative value, but it has never been a left-wing value. People on the left say whatever advances their immediate agenda. Power is their moral lodestar; therefore, truth is always subservient to it. - Dennis Prager

Honestly I don't know what universities actually have a so called "safe place" policy in terms of discussing ideas. If Texas State had one while i was there I never knew it and would've never used it. This is literally the first time I've ever heard of such a thing.

You were probably too busy getting an education instead of paying attention to liberal/progressive crybabies (fellow students and faculty) and their perceived affronts.LosAlce wrote:Honestly I don't know what universities actually have a so called "safe place" policy in terms of discussing ideas. We do have "Safe Zones" which designate staff that has training related to LGBTQ students and the resources available to them, but I have yet to see any policy related to intellectual safe spaces, or microaggressions....thank God.

Are there any "Safe Zones" for normal people to escape the progressive/liberal whiners on campus?TexasTornado wrote:We do have "Safe Zones" which designate staff that has training related to LGBTQ students and the resources available to them, but I have yet to see any policy related to intellectual safe spaces, or microaggressions....thank God.

Actually.....Yes! The Veterans Services Center!!! It has become my favorite place to study and in my mind the safest place on campus.

Re: No "Trigger warnings" at UChicago
True. Considering I got emails for just about every small detail about what was going on around campus I feel like I would've heard of such a thing. Oh well, doesn't matter to me now. Good on this university for stepping up.bblhd672 wrote:You were probably too busy getting an education instead of paying attention to liberal/progressive crybabies (fellow students and faculty) and their perceived affronts.LosAlce wrote:Honestly I don't know what universities actually have a so called "safe place" policy in terms of discussing ideas. If my memory serves, U of C, at least in the economics department, has some surprisingly sane professors, not enraptured by socialism in its many forms.jmorris wrote:One of the last places I'd expect to be a bastion of freedom. Or is my view just colored by it being in Chicago?
