We're too Dumb to Figure this Out

Post by G26ster »

My neighbor is building 3 planter boxes for his greenhouse. They will be 1' x 1' x 9'. He has 1 yard of dirt. How much dirt will it take to fill all three? Answers appreciated, but no complicated formulas please. As I said, were already too dumb

If 1 yard = 1 cubic yard, then he has exactly enough dirt for all three boxes, as 1 box requires .33 cubic yards, correct?

Looks like he did the math correctly. Should have about 10% to spare. Or he was a good guesser.

Math sucks! If siri can't answer math question then just guesstimate.

You build the boxes. You put the dirt you have into them. If you need more dirt you buy more dirt, if you don't need more dirt then you don't buy more dirt. Tada.

As others have said 1 cubic yard of dirt is 27 cubic feet of dirt. If the boxes were 1' x 1' x 9' internal dimensions then to completely fill the boxes would take 27 cubic feet of dirt. If you don't completely fill them (most people leave an inch or two space) then you need slightly less. If the 1' x 1' x 9' is the external dimensions of the boxes then you need slightly less dirt as well. Also if the cubic yard of dirt is compacted and you aerate the soil in the boxes (don't tamp it down hard) then you will also not use all of the cubic yard either. If reverse is true (aerated cubic yard, tamped boxes) then you would need slightly more.

If you ask a farmer, you'll hear >>> It depends on the phase of the moon.
Some times there'll be too much dirt, other times not enough dirt.

Have you ever dug a posthole and set a fence post only to find that you had less dirt left over than would otherwise fill the space the post was now taking up? Why was that? The odds are these lunar expansions and contractions are at work depending on the time of the month you were working. So why not use this to advantage: Dig the posthole during the waxing of the moon, when the soil is expanded and also a bit easier to dig in, and then set the posts at the waning of the moon when the dirt can be more compacted around the post. This results in a sturdier set of the post, which is pretty critical with corner posts or gateposts.
