I read every day and especially enjoy history and stories about what has made the US great for generations. This is my best read in non fiction in a long while.
It is the story of two naval aviators, one New England country club white and one black, the son of a Mississippi sharecropper. The author, Adam Makos Interviewed survivors of Korea, pilots, Marines and US Army who experienced the hell of the battle of Chosin Reservoir. One of these men won the Medal of Honor trying to save his friend and befriended the widow and children upon returning home. It tells the stories of men and their families, children and how lives intertwine over time.
Makos had done a great job with an almost unknown "war" and I can heartily endorse this book. This reads like an adventure war tale, but is all based on the experiences of men who were there

Thanks for the recommendation. So far, the best book about Korea I've read is "Give me Tomorrow: the Korean War's Greatest Untold Story—the Epic Stand of the Marines of George Company" by Patrick K. O'Donnell, available on Amazon in print and Kindle formats.

Interesting side note: I loaned this book to an 85 year old Korean vet buddy--the best fishing and camping friend a man could ever want. He said it made him cry because he remembered the lost friends, but in the end he was glad that someone told this story--he said he had never heard it before. He was there and has the damaged frost bitten fingers to testify to his presence.
