Curious if any of you who're avid hog hunters (and/or landowners who have to deal with pig problems) have seen this one-hour Discovery Channel documentary called "Pig Bomb". I caught it last night and it was eye-opening. The narrator is a bit over-dramatic, and the show gets a bit redundant (seems they had enough for a 40-minute show and stretched it to 60 minutes). But, like I said, the content was eye opening. Discussed the theory that American wild pigs have been cross bred with Russian wild boars, which explains the huge increase in wild pig population, the increase in overall size, and increased aggressiveness.

I know nothing about these wild pigs. I've heard they can be good eatin'. And if I ever see one I'll be certain to shoot it. But I only just started hunting this year (first two deer a few weeks ago), so I'm learnin' .

I think that's a repeat, because I saw basically the same show on the Discovery Channel almost a year ago.

Tejas does have more than our fair share. And the things are one of the reason that our hunting accidents have gone UP in the last dozen years. Not so much because of the danger from the hogs, but danger from careless and/or excited hunters, often with some commotion involved in heavy cover and/or in lousy light.

Where do you hunt for pigs in Texas? Whats the danger level? Do you need a permit? Can I use a handgun?

You hunt for them anywhere you can. My friend has some land and she has asked me up to "take care of" some hogs and coyotes that are bothering her. The only problem is that I don't have a Texas hunting license.

Marksiwel you do need a license unless you are hunting them on your own property as a nuisance, although you can not harvest meat from them in this case. Yes you can shoot them with a pistol, have taken them with several calibers but .38 special swc works very well. (.30cal-.357mag- 357sig- 44mag- .45acp-.45lc-500s&w-.480-.460-.41mag&spl-.40cal-.38spl-.454casull) Under 100 lbs are really good on the smoker. If you can't find a place to hunt contact me as I have a friend who does guided hunts but I don't know his rates. They can have 5 litters in two years so i don't think we are going to run out of them in the near future.

So 9mm wouldnt be enough? I assume you are using Hollow Points

Yeah forgot the 9mm. Hollow points, fmj, sp and wadcutters. They are pretty tough so shot placement is critical.

Hogs are quickly spreading all over Texas. They have spread almost all over the state.

Danger level is pretty low I would say unless you back the hogs into a confined space or you mess with one of their babies. Those sows can get really mean.

Like Sidro said earlier. You can legally hunt them without a hunting license if your hunting them as a nuisance animal but you cannot harvest the meat. You can get a Super Combo Texas hunting/fishing license for 68 bucks at most sporting goods stores including Wally World.

Yes, you can use just about anything if you place your shot correctly. I've even killed them with a bow. Mostly I hunt them with a .223 caliber gun and basically shoot them inside their earhole and it's a direct route to their brain. Very humane and quick way to take them and I don't have to do any tracking. Hogs blood coagulates quickly so they're tough to track when they stop bleeding.

Back on Topic: I did see the Pig Bomb documentary and the Feral Hogs in our area have probably tripled in the last 2 years. It's amazing how quick they multiply. We have also been getting a big hog coming into our game cameras. He is pushing 300 pounds. He will only show up at night though.

That would more than likely be the most effective way. They can run fast and it's tough to get a volley shot sometimes.

An AK round will knock off any Wild Boar, Russian or otherwise.
