I consider the referenced article to be obsolete as the study was performed  January 1, 2005 through December 31, 2007,well over 10 years ago. More recent studies should be used if one is going to use statistics.

Here’s a good thread to read through on the topic.
https://texaschlforum.com/viewtopic.php ... Statistics

If you don’t want to read it all then:https://texaschlforum.com/download/file.php?id=7163

And then there’s the DPS stats:

Over 43,000 convictions in 2017, and LTC holders are less than a half percent of the total; I'd say that's pretty good. There's a couple of bad apples in every group. Might even be a couple of people who got a bum deal or said too much and got themselves convicted.

It's disturbing to dig into what those convictions are, but then I have to remind myself how small a fraction they are of the general populous...which in turn is disturbing all over again.

Yeah, I looked at that also. It is disturbing.

So, by committing suicide before being arrested or convicted, will Joseph Pappas have avoided adding to this list? (I’m assuming that someone, in fact, an ex LEO, who tried to start-up a business as a CHL instructor, as reported in the press, was also a CHL/LTC holder.)

Are we still doing better than LEO’s?

Was Pappas a LTC. Never saw that in any story.

Maybe he was a retired TX peace officer, and therefore didn’t require LTC to carry??? He registered a a business as Pappas Academy of Concealed Handgun Instruction, but was not a current DPS LTC instructor.

I so wish there was a related bit of research available with this conviction data ...Like the case numbers used to build the conviction numbers.

Deadly conduct
Unlawful carrying
Murder
what were those cases about?

I don't know where you would access it, or if you would have to do an open records request, but, if an LTC holder is convicted, of any felony, his LTC is revoked. There also has to be a reason given, for the revocation. If the reason is "convicted, of murder" , then it would be a simple way to locate that person's case. I don't know if these records are available, but it might give you a way to look up the cases. JMHO

Me neither but he was a LEO for many years and LEOSA offers better right to bear arms than LTC.

I asked about an LTC to a person who knew him back when he was competing in IDPA and they couldn't say. Can you retire as a career reserve officer and get retired LEO creds?

Can anyone confirm my thought? When looking at the DPS data posted up string, is it true that the total convictions is not a # of individuals? For instance if someone is arrested and convicted of robbing 2 homes it could be that one person makes up both BURGLARY OF HABITATION convictions on the report?
