Signs in Nursing Homes

I am a hospice social worker. I frequent around 15 to 20 nursing homes in the Dallas area on a regular basis to visit my patients.

Over the past month, as I have become more CHL-saavy, I have noticed the different signs posted at these nursing homes forbidding concealed carry (or carry in general) on the premises. Most of the signs are not to legal specifications. They are either too small, do not quote the law correctly, or are not written in English in Spanish, etc. In fact I have only found ONE sign which would qualify as completely legit.

And, in one particular nursing home, I discovered they were using the "51" sign! I sure hope I end up there if my kids stick me in a home, hah! :)

I, also, go into many nursing homes as part of my job. If the sign does not meet 30.06 standards, I carry in.

BTW, there are nursing homes in the Houston which have actually taken down their signs (both ghostbusters and 30.06).

The people at the 51% nursing home just want to keep out anybody who's a friend of Bill W.

I thought about reporting it, but then they would fix it with the right sign!

It seems like the great majority have a sign saying "State law prohibits the carrying of a hangun...." Since the sign refers to state law I go by what the law really says and continue in.

Many hospitals and nursing homes have a prominent red "51" on the door. Christus St. Michael in Texarkana is properly 30.06 posted (very prominent on all doors), and also has the "51".

Years ago, I recall reading that this is from a literal reading of the law as it was written at that time. Or perhaps it was a Hospital Commission regulation that was written poorly. Anyhoo... lots of them still have a "51", even if they're not 30.06 posted.

From the Govt Code:

§ 411.204. NOTICE REQUIRED ON CERTAIN PREMISES. (a) A
business that has a permit or license issued under Chapter 25, 28,
32, 69, or 74, Alcoholic Beverage Code, and that derives 51[0] percent
or more of its income from the sale of alcoholic beverages for
on-premises consumption as determined by the Texas Alcoholic
Beverage Commission under Section 104.06, Alcoholic Beverage Code,
shall prominently display at each entrance to the business premises
a sign that complies with the requirements of Subsection (c).
(b) A hospital licensed under Chapter 241, Health and Safety
Code, or a nursing home licensed under Chapter 242, Health and
Safety Code, shall prominently display at each entrance to the
hospital or nursing home, as appropriate, a sign that complies with
the requirements of Subsection (c) other than the requirement that
the sign include on its face the number "51".
(c) The sign required under Subsections (a) and (b) must
give notice in both English and Spanish that it is unlawful for a
person licensed under this subchapter to carry a handgun on the
premises. The sign must appear in contrasting colors with block
letters at least one inch in height and must include on its face the
number "51[0]" printed in solid red at least five inches in height.
The sign shall be displayed in a conspicuous manner clearly visible
to the public.
