Quakecon in Dallas this week

Quakecon is at the Dallas Hilton Anatole this week, I know the hotel is not posted, but the event does have a computer gaming competition with a $100,000 cash prize hand out.. Is this considered a professional sporting event. Basically my question is: carry ok
Tickets are not sold for the event. So I would think not, Dallas Police provides security so worst case - I'll just go up and ask one of the DPD officers.
Also any CHL’s attending - please post if you would like to meet-up.

I attented the original Quakecon years back, but haven't been able to make it since.
I'd seriously doubt a computer gaming competition would be considered a "professional sporting event" (particularly given it's held in a hotel), but I'm no lawyer...

I think there is something against carrying at hotels. You may want to check.

Hotels off limits
Respectfully, I think you might be incorrect.. I do not recall hotels being mentioned on my CHL course and I checked the DPS site and there is no mention of concealed carry off limits at hotels.
Not that I want to divert the thread but has anyone else heard about concealed carrry at hotels?

Never heard this one. I go to many hotels "equipped".

Did you sleep through part of your CHL class and dream this while you were snoozing?
There is no prohibition against carrying in a hotel.

Even with money at stake, I don't see some activites - video game playing, poker & billiards tournaments, spelling bees - as "sporting" events.

A bunch of sweaty nerds in a dark hotel ballroom is most definately not a sport.

ejector,
I'll likely be going to quakecon as well, so PM me with contact info if you want to meet up! Also, do you live in dallas, or are you driving/flying in from elsewhere?

I have some time this weekend and have a friend that would probably like to go. I don't know if I will make the drive from Austin, but I might. Where is the get together?

I can't think of a more important place for me to carry.

Well I carried, but my spider sense was going nuts, so I went back my car and disarmed then approached one of the Dallas Sheriff officers who are providing security (not DPD this year) and asked if she considered the event a professional sporting event with respect to CHL carry. She then asked me I was trying to bring a weapon in – I said no, and she quickly stated that NO WEAPONS ARE PERMITTED inside the event.
I know I should have stated this, but I am still learning all this and I just have to know.. so I stated that there is no 30.06 posted.. and with very direct look in my eyes “NO WEAPONS PERMITTED. I got the impression that I needed to stop asking questions and nicely go away. So at any rate I believe the gun buster/no weapons/no 30.06 enigma is up to the individual LEO discretion. (duh!)
Lessons learned for this nerd: When there are thousands of people at an event and LEOs are providing security, best not to carry - or ask CHL questions to the same LEOS providing that security.

Since it is private property, it is my impression that they can bar anyone from admission. Once they verbally tell you not to bring in a gun, I think that trumps the 30.06 posting.

I dislike LEOs working as security for private functions, because it presents a conflict. A LEO giving verbal notice is speaking for the management, while in uniform. So much for "equal protection under the law".
ejector, I take it that you're still somewhat new to carrying, and lack confidence in the law and your rights. That's perfectly understandable, and the confidence will come with experience. Carrying with confidence would mean knowing that a Quakecon is not a sporting event, and since it's a private venue, you're legal to carry there in the absence of a 30.06 notice.
Unfortunately, you received verbal notice because you asked.
