Concealment versus Cover

They're not the same.

Good Marine Corps MOUT video showing the effects of various weapons systems against building materials. Think "Box o' Truth", jarhead-style.

I agree, great post.

What did we learn from this video that we can apply to home construction?

1. Use both cynder block AND brick.

2. DO NOT set off a hand grenade inside your house.

3. DO NOT mess with the marines.

4. A 30mm chain gun is not the ideal home defense weapon if you're concerned about penetration.

Here's what I took away from the video:

1. An AK-47 (or SKS) beats an M-16/AR-15, but we already knew that.

2. A .30mm round shot out of a tank is pretty destructive (and cool).

3. Never use fragmentation grenades in your own home.

Oh yeah...brick ain't stopping much...use steel when constructing your home.

Whoops, I didn't mean to steal that from KB! I'll make a new one...

3. Never sit in your house idly when someone is blasting it with a grenade launcher.

A whole bunch of years ago I wanted to target shoot using the barn as a backstop. I was pretty young and not real well acquainted with the realities of what bullets can do, after all, we shot in the basement with wood as a backstop, and in the movies the cowboys were always well protected if hiding behind wooden walls and such.

My grandpappy came up with an object lesson for me. He set up a melon against the back of the barn, and then paced off a distance from the front of the barn and, aiming very carefully, put a shot through the barn front to back, and destroyed the melon.

Back then I was super impressed by the demonstration because it showed the awesome power that a bullet can have, later I became more impressed with the old man's marksmanship.

And then he made me fix the barn.

As a kid, we put a plastic model on by brother's bunk bed to destroy with a BB gun. To prevent damage to the window immediately behind, we pulled down the paper thin plastic roller shade. When we were done destroying the model, we noticed the tiny little holes in the shade. It went downhill from there.

The shade provided good concealment, but wasn't much good at covering the window.

I agree, not ideal when worried about over penetration, but I WANT ONE.
