17-year-old shoots carjacker who pulled gun on youth's mother

METAIRIE, La. (AP) -- A man with a gun was trying to force a woman out of her car at a fast-food drive-through when the woman's 17-year-old son wrestled the gun away from him and shot him.

Carl Chestnut, 44, of Kenner, is expected to survive wounds to his head and body, and will face armed robbery charges once he is released from East Jefferson General Hospital, Col. John Fortunato, a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman, said Monday.

It would have been safer to hand over the keys and let the gunman drive off, Sheriff Harry Lee said Monday.

Fortunato said the 53-year-old woman was in line at an Arby's Roast Beef Restaurant about 1:30 a.m. Monday when Chestnut walked up and pointed a gun at her, demanding their money and the car.

When he leaned inside, aiming the gun with one hand and trying to yank her out with the other, the 17-year-old grabbed the gun, Fortunato said. He said it went off once as they strugged, but did not hit anyone. Once the youth got the gun, he shot Chestnut several times, Fortunato said.

Sylena Rhodes, a corporate officer for Arby's, said, "He saved his mother's life. He's a hero. He's an absolute hero."

Lee acknowledged that the gamble succeeded, but said it was one that could have cost lives. He repeated advice that the best way to survive a holdup is to cooperate.

"Give them the money and give them the keys. You make an insurance payment on your car, and nobody gets shot," he said.

Everyone has to make their own decision on the spot.

This story had a 50-50 chance of being "mother and son killed by carjacker."

You're absolutely right! I'm so tired of "officials" spewing this garbage that it's better not to resist. (They ignore the FBI statistics when they say this.) I'm not going to let my life, or the life of anyone else I'm with, hinge on the goodwill of someone who has already pulled a gun on me!

Yeah, I'm in a bad mood this morning, sorry. :mad5

Now how would that have been safer????? Every situation is different, maybe the gunman would have driven off without harming anyone, maybe not. No one knows. But one thing is for certain: The kid and his mom are now safe. I think the decision needs to be made at the moment, depending on the specific circumstances, and this kid did what he thought was right and it turned out to be the right decision.

That kinda get under my skin too. I have heard of stories where the victoms complied and still had to make a trip to the hospital or morge. Should I ever be in a situation where some one wants my belonging, its not going to turn out the way the BG plan.

The only problem I see in this case is that the thief survived. I’m not saying I wouldn’t hand over my keys, but the kid saw his chance and took it good for him.

if I saw a chance to disarm the guy, I would take it.
If he wouldn't quit being a problem, I'd shoot him.

Good for the kid on stopping the BG. Now, somebody teach him how to shoot so the BG doesn't just have injuries to the face and abdomen ;-)

Give the BG what he wants...yeah, kinda like telling a woman not to fight a rapist to just give him what he wants and you'll be safe.

After almost daily examples of how silly this advice is, I can't imagine anyone with half a brain would believe it.

Just today: another example in the Dallas paper. Three armed robbers, two males and one female as bait. Victim shot in back of head. Robbery unsolved until one of the males ratted out the other two and led police to the bones of the victim that followed the above advice.

I was amazed myself.. I found myself re-reading the article a few times.

As I mentioned at the start the thread my CHL instructor had the same scenerio, he went further .. "do you really want to have to go through the stress and ordeal of shooting over something that can easily be replaced".

For me.. put in this situation and given an opportunity to defend myself - I would not hestitate.

Ya know, they locked up all those frauds with the "Psychic Friends" network. But we still get folks thinking they can tell the future...........
