Anyone go to the Houston Rodeo BBQ last night? I heard that this year they are not allowing CHL carry into the event. In past years even though they were wanding people CHL holders were let through after showing their card.

I'm headed out there tonight as the designated driver for some friends and family. I planned on carrying but don't want go back to the car to disarm if I can't.

I was there last night. When entering the carnival area to get to the cookoff, everyone had to go through a metal detector. When I emptied my pockets, I had a small pocket knife and a larger knife. They didn't recognize the larger one as a knife, but made me throw the small one away or return it to my car but that was too far for the value of the knife. I wasn't carrying my gun because I planned to have a few adult beverages.

So, I guess its safe to say that you should leave the gun in the car.

yea like that kid that got disqualified from the art thing because it included a picture of a gun. I never knew the hlsr board was a bunch of liberal sissies. They always came off as a gold ol boys club of white republican males to me.

I guess I'm a penny-pincher. I would have even returned my little $14 Kershaw Shuffle to the car. That is curious that they wouldn't even allow pocket knives. Talk about paranoid.

Wasn't there a shooting at the rodeo in recent years, possibly at the cookoff?

30.06 wouldn't be enforceable as NRG park & stadium are county-owned & operated. At best, I'd say that 51% could apply to individual vendors but not to the entire event.

I came from the land of OC/CC, and could do both so never had to worry about intentionally displaying. I'm asking this as I'd truly like to know, not as flame bait...but being newish to TX I've never encountered these situations. So with this one - you get there, no 30.06 posting but they have a metal detector. It does go off and they ask you what it is and/or to remove it. What then? Do you tell them what it is, or do you show your CHL and wink, do you lift your shirt, or what?

Probably best to ask to speak to the on duty LEO in charge before going through the metal detector. Show your chl, inform that you're armed and ask how they'd like to proceed. As I stated before, NRG park and stadium are publicly owned & operated. So they cannot prohibit concealed carry into the cook off itself.

I never saw either sign. I've been in two different entrances in 3 days. Honestly it wasn't a big deal to me since I had planned to disarm anyway. But my usual instinct is to look for the signs and I didn't see them. Didn't see any gun buster signs either (I know they don't matter - just saying). If someone wanted to raise the issue I think it would be valid.

This same scenario has played out at the State Fair of Texas many times. You walk up to security, inform them that you are CHL carrying, and unless they inform you that, per section 30.06 you are not allowed, then they pretty much have to follow the law and let you in. And if they just say "no guns allowed" and so on, you probably have cause for legal action.

Carrying at the State Fair of Texas? Sounds fine to me, but aren't we forbidden to carry in amusement parks?

Frankly, I'm a little confused. I think the DPS FAQ's are out of date. For instance, they way we can't carry on the premises of a hospital or nursing home, but in my CHL class I was told I couldn't carry in a hospital if 30.06 was posted. Odd, that one kind of place would be specifically mentioned as 30.06-compatible, so to speak, but that's what my instructor said.

I need to do some more reading. In the meantime, I'll err on the side of caution.
