I've found all the information about the discount for veterans but can't seem to find the answer to when/how that is documented. What I'd like to know is whether simply providing my drivers license info does that, given that DPS when I was getting my license has already verified my DD-214 and my license has "VETERAN" on it. Does one side of DPS talk to the other side?

What I meant was that since you have to provide your DL info, which they use to verify residency and information, in that same record it already indicates veteran status. So they already have verification.

Maybe the better question to ask is whether or not anyone has had their status verified simply through their DL?

I think the concealed handgun licensing section is different from the drivers license section. While it is possible they might capture the status you are better to make sure and send a copy of your DD214 with your application. The big reason is when they are processing your paperwork they will need to see it up front to determine you get the Veteran discount

I sent them an electronic copy of my DD-214 with my renewal application. They waited until my license had expired and then sent me a letter stating that they could not apply the discount without a copy of my DD-214. So I sent them a second copy, this time through snail mail, and they sent me my license. Better to be safe than sorry. Send them a copy of your DD-214 through postal mail.

I sent a copy of my DD-214 by snail mail because it is very dim and does not "scan" well. Got my renewal within a couple of weeks and they returned my DD-214 copy a week or so later.

For those who are retired military, you can scan your retired ID card (front and back) and send that in.

It worked for me.

I'm pretty sure though that scanning or making a copy of a DoD retired ID card is against Federal law. You can show it for ID purposes (and discounts and such) but not provide a copy. That's one of the head scratching things to me about this whole thing in that I **assumed** that TX offering a process for documenting it and then showing that status on your license had an actual purpose (like as a way of proving that identification). And DD-214s get very light over the years.

Actually, I don't think that is correct. The Federal law may actually leave a potential for that usage by government agencies, but DoD is specifically and additionally governed by DODI 1000.13 and that outlines the only authorized copying and provides example exceptions such as medical care processing, check cashing voting, tax matters, or other military-related benefits to eligible beneficiaries. I don't believe that a discount on CHL falls under the definition of related benefits as those refer to under an incorporated reference benefits officially designated to DoD retirees. But hey, I could be wrong and this is wandering away from my original post intent.

Just to be clear, the copy of my DD-214 I sent in was a copy issued to me by the federal government. Not one that I made.
You can request additional copies.

Also, make sure that the copy of the DD214 that you send in is the long form. Meaning it is the one that shows your discharge status i.e. Honorable, OTH etc.

My retired ID card has my Social Security number printed on it. Not something one should be handing around...

I need to renew in about a year, do I need to send in a copy of my
DD214 again, I submitted it on my last renewal?
