Hey everyone. I am new to site and have enjoyed reading and gaining knowledge. Can someone tell me if it is better to fill out application online first and test later or vice versus????

I can say I did everything the same day I got my fingerprints done and submitted all online and I had a 47day turnaround.

Oh, I did take the proficiency class first.

Thank you!!! I was debating which to do first.

I filled out my paperwork first and tested last. I am not sure it makes a difference. I guess it just depends when the class of your choice is scheduled to start. If you have to wait a few days, you might as well do the paperwork while waiting.

Do you still have to do fingerprints after the online application? If so, that's one argument for doing the application first, because the process doesn't start until DPS has everything.

I dont think it makes much of a difference but its been a few years since I've done it. I think i applied first, class/test last.

By law it makes no difference which order you do it in.
If you are not confident in your computer skills I recomend to students to come to class first. I give some helps on the APP process. Many other instructors do to. Some dont.
Here in Deep East Texas there are a LOT of folks that do not even have a computer. I have had several come to the house to fill it out & use my email address. Working w/ one right now that has computer but no printer.
If you are comfortable & confident in your computer skills go for it. It is simple. If I can do it anyone can.
If not go to class 1st. I would be glad to have you in one of mine.

I am in Houston. I have a computer, printer and skills. I just wanted to know which was the quickest way to becoming a CHL holder,,,lol

as a recent recipient of a CHL i would recommend doing the online application first.... that way you get your appt time for fingerprints.... then take your class.... also highly recommend scanning all your documents into one file then submitting it... while waiting for your class, practice as much as you can....

Online application.
-Schedule/complete prints
-Schedule/complete class

When I took the CHL Instructor Course, the DPS Instructor stated what she called the "Happy Path"

1. Fill out on-line application
2. Get finger prints done
3. Take course

Since there is usually some amount of time between the app and the fingerprints and then the course, it allows DPS to get working on the app sooner (if only by a few days).

I filled out the online app, took the class and then got finger printed. Doesn't really matter if you take the class first or fill out the app. Just do it and get legal.

I did not I took class first and then online app then fingerprints then mailed required materials and I think if I would have done online app first I probably would have got chl sooner

I dont think DPS starts on the application until it is complete, and that includes the CHL100.
